Bitcoin Seminar in Frankfurt
Frankfurt is the seat of the Deutsche Bundesbank and of Deutsche Börse Group, whose settlement arm Clearstream opened bitcoin custody to institutional clients in March 2025. Professional investors in the city treat bitcoin as an asset class of its own because its code caps the supply at 21 million coins. Finance Loop's Bitcoin for Investors masterclass runs in Frankfurt; dates and booking are on the masterclass page.
Why bitcoin is its own asset class
Bitcoin's supply follows a rule written into its code, not a decision by a company or a central bank. The Bitcoin whitepaper set out that new coins enter circulation only through the first transaction of each block, and that once a fixed number of coins have been issued, new supply stops. Bitcoin Core's source code enforces that hard cap at 21,000,000 BTC and halves the block reward roughly every four years, a schedule no single party can change without agreement across the network.
That fixed issuance sets bitcoin apart from equities, bonds and fiat currency, where a company, a state or a central bank can add supply. An IMF note found that bitcoin showed little correlation with major stock indices before 2020, and that correlation with S&P 500 volatility rose more than four-fold after the pandemic began. A Frankfurt asset manager weighs that shift when sizing a position, since bitcoin's correlation to equities is not fixed.
Frankfurt's role in bitcoin custody and trading
Frankfurt is the seat of the Deutsche Bundesbank and the German office of BaFin, the supervisor that authorizes the crypto-asset service providers a Frankfurt investor uses to buy or hold bitcoin. Crypto custody became a licensed financial service in Germany on January 1, 2020, under the German Banking Act, and full MiCA licensing for crypto-asset service providers applies since December 30, 2024.
Clearstream, part of Deutsche Börse Group and based in the Frankfurt area, opened bitcoin and ether custody and settlement to institutional clients in March 2025, with Crypto Finance (Deutschland) as MiCA-licensed sub-custodian, and added six more crypto currencies to that custody offering in July 2026. Deutsche Börse's presence gives a Frankfurt investor institutional-grade settlement infrastructure for bitcoin inside the same group that clears German equities and bonds.
The risks a Frankfurt investor weighs
ESMA warns that an investor may lose the full amount invested in a crypto-asset, and MiCA sets up no investor compensation scheme for a crypto-asset service provider's clients, unlike deposit insurance for a bank account. The Basel Committee's prudential standard, in force since January 1, 2025, puts bitcoin in the bank risk category reserved for unbacked crypto-assets, with a risk weight of up to 1250% and total exposure capped near 1% to 2% of a bank's Tier 1 capital. That rule shapes how much a Frankfurt bank can hold on its own balance sheet.
A BaFin survey from April 2026 found that about 13% of adults in Germany, more than nine million people, held crypto-assets, and that 54% of them wrongly believed bitcoin protects against inflation. BaFin names bitcoin's volatility as the reason that belief does not hold. A professional-grade seminar covers that distinction inside a portfolio context, apart from a retail purchase decision.

Is there a bitcoin seminar for investors in Frankfurt?
Yes. Finance Loop's Bitcoin for Investors masterclass is a one-day, in-person seminar for investors, asset managers, family offices and advisors, with sessions in Frankfurt. It covers bitcoin's risk profile, custody options and portfolio fit, not how to buy bitcoin for personal use. Dates and booking are on the masterclass page.
Can a bank or asset manager in Frankfurt custody bitcoin locally?
Yes. Clearstream, part of Deutsche Börse Group in the Frankfurt area, offers institutional bitcoin custody and settlement through Crypto Finance (Deutschland), a MiCA-licensed sub-custodian. A Frankfurt investor can also use any crypto-asset service provider that holds full MiCA authorization from BaFin.
Does BaFin regulate bitcoin itself?
No. BaFin treats a crypto-asset without an identifiable issuer, such as bitcoin, as unregulated in itself; only the services around it, such as trading and custody, need authorization. A Frankfurt firm that offers bitcoin custody or trading needs a MiCA license from BaFin, in force since December 30, 2024.
