camt.053: the XML bank statement that replaced MT940

camt.053 is the ISO 20022 message for the end-of-day account statement: all bookings of one business day on one account, sent by the bank after close of business. In Germany it replaces the MT940 statement, whose rules the banking associations ended in November 2025.

camt.052, camt.053 and camt.054

Deutsche Bank's camt fact sheet (in German) describes three messages. camt.053 is the end-of-day statement used for account reconciliation and replaces the MT940. camt.052 is the intraday account report with bookings during the day and succeeds the MT942. camt.054 is the debit and credit notification on transaction level, with the details of batch bookings and of returns, rejections and refunds. camt stands for cash management.

Banks deliver the messages over EBICS, host-to-host or Swift FileAct. For instant transfers, an optional EBICS procedure of the Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft notifies the company in real time when the money arrives, the DK writes (in German), so the booking can be matched before the end-of-day statement.

What changes from MT940

MT940 is a text format with fixed field tags and limited field lengths, so details are often cut. camt.053 uses named XML elements, supports Unicode and carries references such as the end-to-end ID of the original payment. Batch details that MT940 cannot show move to a separate camt.054. Every booking carries an ISO bank transaction code with domain, family and subfamily; the three-digit German business transaction code becomes optional.

The OLB (in German) states that the Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft ended its rules for MT940-based account information in November 2025, after years of parallel operation. The version in use is camt.053.001.08, which replaces the older .02.

Running the switch

The ERP or treasury system has to read ISO 20022 XML and Unicode, and the mapping from MT940 fields to camt elements has to be rebuilt. Deutsche Bank recommends receiving MT940 and camt.053 in parallel for testing and estimates about two months of preparation, one to two months of development and one to two months of testing. Files get larger because they carry more detail.

Outside Germany the timing differs. The Zürcher Kantonalbank (in German) plans no replacement of MT940, since it remains the standard at international banks.

What is the difference between camt.053 and camt.054?

camt.053 is the statement of all bookings on an account for one day. camt.054 notifies single debits and credits and breaks a batch booking into its transactions, for example the individual direct debits behind one collective booking.

Is MT940 still available?

In Germany the common rules of the banks ended in November 2025, and each bank sets its own date for switching off. Some banks offer a period of coexistence on request. Banks in other countries may keep MT940 longer.

Which camt.053 version should a company use?

The one its banks deliver. In Germany that is camt.053.001.08 under the current format specification. A company with banks in several countries often receives several versions and needs a parser that reads each of them.
