Data centers in Germany and what finance needs from them

Germany had about 2,000 data centers with more than 100 kilowatts of connected load in 2025, about 100 of them above 5 megawatts. Together they reached an IT capacity of 2,980 megawatts, 9 percent more than a year before, according to a study presented by the digital association Bitkom (in German) in November 2025. The 100 largest sites hold half of that capacity.

For banks the data center is where core banking and trading systems run, whether the bank owns the hall, rents colocation space or buys cloud services hosted there.

Where the capacity sits

Hesse has a little more than 1,100 megawatts, more than a third of the German total, and the Frankfurt area grew fastest at about 14 percent. Bavaria follows with 420 megawatts, North Rhine-Westphalia with 378, Baden-Württemberg with 233 and Berlin with 146. The page on data centers in Frankfurt covers the cluster around the internet exchange DE-CIX.

Announced projects follow the same pattern. Bitkom counts more than 1,800 megawatts planned in Frankfurt, 888 in Brandenburg and 480 in Nierstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, and a project of about 1,000 megawatts is under discussion in Dummerstorf near Rostock.

AI drives the growth

AI workloads used about 15 percent of German capacity in 2025, or 530 megawatts. Bitkom expects that to reach 2,020 megawatts by 2030, 40 percent of a total that passes 5,000 megawatts. Cloud services account for almost half of today's capacity. The data centers used 21.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2025, against 12 billion in 2015.

For comparison, the United States had 48 gigawatts of IT capacity in 2024 and China 38, so the US figure is about 16 times the German one. Bitkom also notes that planning and approval in Germany take about six months longer than the law provides. For banks that want to train or run models in Germany, see sovereign AI and the EU's AI gigafactory program.

What banks need from a data center

Supervisors ask for two sites that do not fail together. In 2018 the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) raised its recommended distance between georedundant data centers to about 200 kilometers, and never less than 100. IT Finanzmagazin (in German) reported on what the distance means for banks under BaFin supervision.

Operators also report under the German Energy Efficiency Act, which sets limits on power use and quotas for renewable electricity and waste heat, and a bank that outsources to a data center can use these figures for its own ESG reporting. The cooperative banks' IT provider Atruvia and the Sparkassen's Finanz Informatik run their own data centers.

Upcoming events on digital infrastructure

How many data centers are in Germany?

Bitkom counts about 2,000 data centers with more than 100 kilowatts of connected load, of which about 100 are larger than 5 megawatts. Smaller server rooms in companies are not included.

Where are new data centers being built in Germany?

Most planned capacity is in the Frankfurt area, with more than 1,800 megawatts announced. Further large projects are in Brandenburg, in Nierstein in Rhineland-Palatinate and in Dummerstorf in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and plans for an AI data center near Munich have been presented.

Data centers in Germany and Finance Loop

Finance Loop holds its meetups in Frankfurt, the largest data center market in Germany, and covers the buildings behind banking in its Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty track. Finance Loop is media partner of Capital & Code 2026, a conference whose audience includes data center operators, and offers operators a sponsored meetup to meet the IT and outsourcing heads of banks.

Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the adoption of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, digital payments, cloud and blockchain solutions. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
