Stripe payments in Europe and Germany

Stripe started as a few lines of code that let a developer accept a card payment. A German software company or online shop now uses it to take cards, SEPA direct debits and wallets and to pay out sellers on a marketplace, under an Irish e-money license that covers the EEA. Through Bridge, Stripe also moves money in stablecoins.

Stripe's payment products

Stripe builds payment software for internet businesses. Brothers Patrick and John Collison founded the company, which has headquarters in San Francisco and Dublin (Stripe). Payments handles payment acceptance. Connect manages payments for platforms, Billing handles subscriptions and Terminal supports in-person payments. Radar uses machine learning to screen transactions for fraud.

Stripe's license in the EU

For customers in the EEA, Stripe works through its subsidiary Stripe Technology Europe, Limited (STEL), which is authorized as an electronic money institution by the Central Bank of Ireland. Stripe states that STEL passports this license on a freedom-of-services basis to all EEA countries under PSD2 (Stripe). A German merchant therefore contracts with an Irish company, the pattern fintech in Dublin describes for many US payment firms. The e-money license explains what an EMI may do with customer funds and what it may not.

Payment methods for German shoppers

Stripe states that it gives merchants access to more than 125 payment methods and local acquiring in 46 markets (Stripe Payments). Its German checkout shows SEPA direct debit, PayPal and cards next to Klarna as the buy now, pay later option. Stripe is also on the list of acquirers and partners that the European Payments Initiative named for Wero e-commerce in Germany (EPI). Ecommerce payments in Germany covers how people in Germany pay online.

Stripe in stablecoins

Stripe completed its acquisition of Bridge, a stablecoin orchestration platform (Stripe). Through Bridge it offers businesses dollar stablecoin balances inside Stripe Treasury, starting with USDC, and Open Issuance, a service with which a company can launch its own stablecoin (Stripe). Klarna built KlarnaUSD on Open Issuance. For a European merchant, cards and bank payments remain the core of the business; stablecoin payments covers how a payment in a token works and how MiCA treats it.
