Why bitcoin is its own asset class

Bitcoin's supply is not set by a company or a monetary authority. The Bitcoin whitepaper describes new coins entering circulation only through the first transaction in each block, with the reward halving on a fixed schedule until it reaches zero. Bitcoin Core's source code enforces a hard cap of 21,000,000 BTC and halves the block subsidy roughly every four years, rules built into the software every participant runs, not a policy a central bank could change.

That fixed issuance gives bitcoin a form of scarcity equities, bonds and fiat currency do not share, since a company can issue new shares and a central bank can expand the money supply. Institutional demand has since become a large part of what moves bitcoin's price. The SEC approved the first spot bitcoin ETPs for listing and trading on January 10, 2024, even as its chair called bitcoin "primarily a speculative, volatile asset". BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF alone held close to 67 billion US dollars in net assets as of late September 2026, a scale of institutional flow a Berlin investor now weighs against the fund's own reported one-year return of minus 45.62 percent, a reminder that scarcity does not mean stability.

Berlin's role in German bitcoin advocacy

Berlin is where Germany's bitcoin advocacy took organized form. Finance Loop is a founding member of the Bitcoin Bundesverband, the German Bitcoin Association formed in Berlin to support the industry, and the city remains a reference point for German bitcoin policy work even though BaFin supervision runs out of Bonn and Frankfurt.

German tax law gives a private investor in Berlin a direct incentive to understand bitcoin's holding period rules. Under section 23 of the Einkommensteuergesetz, a private sale of "andere Wirtschaftsgüter" such as bitcoin is taxable only if the holding period is one year or less, and gains stay tax free once the yearly total for private sales falls below 1,000 euros. A draft bill from the Federal Ministry of Finance would replace that exemption with a flat withholding tax from 2027, so a Berlin investor's current tax treatment may not last through the next holding period.

What a Berlin investor should weigh first

An IMF study found that bitcoin's correlation with major stock indices stayed low before 2020, then rose more than four-fold against S&P 500 volatility once the pandemic began. ESMA warns that an investor may lose the full amount invested in a crypto-asset, and MiCA sets up no investor compensation scheme, unlike deposit protection for a bank account. A Berlin investor sizing a bitcoin position weighs both the correlation shift and the absence of a safety net most other regulated products carry.
