bunq

bunq is a mobile bank from Amsterdam that runs current accounts, savings accounts, payment cards and investments through one smartphone app, without any branches. Private customers, freelancers and companies open an account online with an ID document and a selfie, and the bank holds a full banking license from De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch central bank.

Ali Niknam founded bunq in 2012, and the app launched for the public in November 2015 before the bank opened to every EU market in October 2019. bunq counts more than 22 million users in Europe and offers local IBANs from seven countries, Germany among them. Eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000 per person under the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme.

Accounts, savings and investing in one app

A bunq account comes with a digital card on the first day and a savings account that pays interest every week, with free withdrawals up to twice a month. Customers on the larger plans can split their money across up to 25 bank accounts with their own IBANs. Local IBANs from the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Ireland let customers receive a salary and pay rent like residents of that country.

In December 2025 bunq added term deposits with fixed rates for periods between three and 24 months. Customers also buy stocks in the same app, and the round-up function can move the spare change of each card payment into crypto assets. The bunq Elite plan adds travel insurance and mobile data for trips abroad through a global eSIM.

Wero, card payments and mobile wallets

The bunq cards run on the Mastercard network and can be added to Apple Pay for payments by phone, and the same works with Google Pay. Since September 2026 customers in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium send money and pay online with Wero inside the bunq app. bunq was the first bank to offer both uses of Wero in all four markets.

Wero is the account-to-account wallet of the European Payments Initiative, which a group of European banks and payment providers founded. Wero transfers settle over SEPA Instant within seconds, and in the Netherlands the wallet is due to replace iDEAL for online payments in 2027.

Crypto trading and staking with Kraken

In April 2025 bunq added crypto trading to its app in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy and Belgium, with more than 300 coins such as bitcoin, ether and Solana. The trades run through Kraken Embed, the crypto-as-a-service platform of the exchange Kraken, which holds a MiCA license from the Central Bank of Ireland. Customers in Germany followed in August 2025, when IT Finanzmagazin reported (in German) more than 350 assets and orders from €1.

Since September 2025 bunq customers in the EEA, Germany included, can stake selected coins without a lock-up period and earn up to 10 percent a year. The rewards come from helping to validate transactions on the blockchain networks of these coins, as explained under crypto staking. Customers can buy, sell or unstake their coins at any time.

Business accounts and banking-as-a-service

Freelancers and companies run their business banking in the same app as private customers, with company cards, connections to accounting software and up to 25 bank accounts. Owners of Dutch apartment buildings use the bunq Core Business plan to manage the shared money of their homeowners associations.

In April 2026 bunq started a banking-as-a-service offer with the Dutch bitcoin platform Blockrise and opened it to companies across the EU in June 2026. Partners build on the open API of bunq to issue virtual cards, hold customer funds and send SEPA Instant transfers. In the first month, 40 percent of the eligible Blockrise users moved their money to a personal bunq IBAN.

Profit, deposits and the US license

bunq reported a net profit of €85.3 million for 2024, up from €51.6 million in 2023 and its second profitable year in a row. Customer deposits at bunq passed €10 billion in September 2026, when the bank presented its app update 32 in Amsterdam.

In the United States, FINRA approved bunq as a broker-dealer in October 2025, so that American users can invest in US stocks, mutual funds and ETFs. bunq has also applied for banking licenses in the United States and in Mexico.

DNB fine for customer due diligence

De Nederlandsche Bank fined bunq €2.6 million on 6 May 2025 for insufficient ongoing customer due diligence under the Dutch anti-money laundering act between January 2021 and May 2022. The supervisor found that bunq had not followed up transaction monitoring alerts properly in four high-risk client files. bunq objected to the fine, DNB rejected the objection on 14 October 2025, and bunq filed an appeal on 24 November 2025.

Upcoming payments events in Europe

Is bunq a real bank?

Yes, bunq B.V. has held a European banking license since September 2014 and is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam. Its branches in Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy and Belgium also answer to the supervisors of those countries, BaFin among them.

Branch and German IBAN in Germany

bunq runs a branch in Germany, registered in Munich under HRB 293822, and customers who live there can open an account with a German IBAN. Under the EU passport for banks, the Dutch license lets bunq serve German customers through this branch without a separate German banking license.

Deposit protection up to €100,000

Eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000 per person by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme, which also covers customers of the German branch. The app checks the name of the recipient against the IBAN before each transfer and can hold an unusual payment for 24 hours of review.

Account plans and trading fees

The plans range from bunq Free with no monthly fee to bunq Core at €3.99, bunq Pro at €9.99 and bunq Elite at €18.99 a month. Stock trades cost 20 percent less on bunq Pro and half as much on bunq Elite, while crypto fees ranged from 1.99 percent on bunq Free to 0.25 percent on bunq Elite at the German launch.

Credit card with a limit of up to €5,000

The bunq credit card has no monthly fee and is meant to be paid off in full every month, with spending and upcoming repayments shown in the app. Since September 2026 the card can carry a credit limit of up to €5,000, starting with a waitlist of 1,000 users per market in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.
