Bybit EU: the European Bybit exchange in Vienna
Bybit EU is the European exchange of Bybit, the crypto exchange that Ben Zhou founded in 2018 and that has had its head office in Dubai since 2022, according to Wikipedia. Bybit EU GmbH in Vienna holds a license as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA from the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA), and Vienna is the European head office of Bybit.
Bybit EU is an event partner of Finance Loop. In Frankfurt it held Crypto Flow, an evening on digital assets and European regulation at TechQuartier, and a roadshow evening with Circle before the Crypto Assets Conference 2026.
Bybit EU and the MiCA license
The FMA authorized Bybit EU GmbH as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA, the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, as CoinDesk reported. With this license Bybit EU may offer its services in 29 countries of the European Economic Area, Germany among them. MiCA sets rules for consumer protection, for transparency and against money laundering, and a CASP has to keep customer assets apart from its own.
Payments run through a second company: Bybit Payments GmbH, also in Vienna, holds an electronic money license from Austria, as The Paypers reported. It issues e-money and runs payment services, for example for the Bybit card, while Bybit EU GmbH keeps the crypto business. What the CASP license asks of a company is described on CASP license, and the AML side on crypto AML.
Bybit EU events with Finance Loop
Crypto Flow by Bybit EU brought investors, builders, policy experts and market participants to TechQuartier in Frankfurt. Shonela Grabowski, Head of Strategy at Bybit DE, and Mykolas Majauskas, Senior Director of Policy, spoke about market positioning, compliance under MiCAR and the role of crypto platforms in Europe. Finance Loop, TechQuartier and the Blockchain Bundesverband supported the evening. Crypto Flow was the after event of the Forum für Digitale Vermögenswerte 2026, where Finance Loop was a partner.
On the evening before the Crypto Assets Conference 2026, Bybit EU and Circle, the issuer of USDC and EURC, hosted the Bybit EU x Circle Roadshow in Frankfurt. Two panels covered the future of stablecoins and real crypto use cases in Europe. Finance Loop and the Blockchain Bundesverband supported this evening as well. More on the stablecoin issuer is on Circle, USDC and EURC.
What happened in the Bybit hack?
In February 2025, attackers took about 401,000 ETH, worth around 1.5 billion US dollars at the time, from a Bybit wallet. The FBI named North Korea as the attacker and calls the group behind it "TraderTraitor". The attackers broke into a third-party service that Bybit used to move tokens from a cold wallet to a warm wallet, and changed the signing process so that the approvers signed a different transaction than the one they saw. The stolen funds were then spread over thousands of addresses on several blockchains.
The case shows why wallet software and outside service providers are part of an exchange's security. How investigators follow such funds on chain is on blockchain forensics.
What is Bybit EU?
Bybit EU is the part of Bybit that serves customers in the European Economic Area. It runs from Vienna under Austrian supervision and MiCA, while the global Bybit exchange works under other entities outside the EU. Customers in the EU sign up with Bybit EU GmbH.
Is Bybit legal in Germany?
Yes, through Bybit EU. Its MiCA license from Austria is passported to Germany, so German customers can use Bybit EU without a separate BaFin license. The FMA in Vienna supervises it. How the German side works, with BaFin and the KMAG, is on MiCA rules in Germany, and a comparison with other platforms is on the largest crypto exchanges in Germany.
