Financial Services Marketing in Europe
Financial services marketing is the marketing of banking, investment, insurance and payment products, to consumers and to businesses. In the EU it is regulated marketing: investment firms, fund managers and crypto firms must keep their marketing communications fair, clear and not misleading, and German law lets BaFin ban certain types of bank advertising. AI now decides much of the targeting, and AI, tokenized funds and stablecoins are the subjects buyers want explained. Dated events are in the calendar below.
The rules for marketing communications
The same three words run through EU financial law. Article 24(3) of MiFID II requires all information an investment firm gives clients, marketing communications included, to be fair, clear and not misleading, and marketing communications to be clearly identifiable as such. Article 4 of the regulation on cross-border distribution of funds sets the same test for fund marketing, and Article 7 of MiCA adds it for crypto-assets, with the extra condition that the message matches the white paper.
Germany has a national tool on top. Section 23 of the Banking Act lets BaFin prohibit certain types of advertising by banks and financial services institutions to stop abuses. For a marketing team the practical result is a review step: legal or compliance reads every claim about returns, risks and fees before it goes out.
Retail and B2B are two different jobs
Retail financial marketing sells accounts, cards, loans and investment apps to millions of people, mostly through search, social media and comparison sites. B2B financial services marketing sells to a few hundred institutions: core banking software, payment processing, custody, data and compliance tools. There the buyer is a committee, and the questions are about regulation, outsourcing and integration, which bank marketing covers for the German banking groups.
Most of the firms in the Finance Loop network sell B2B. For them the marketing mix leans on events, reports and webinars and personal introductions more than on paid ads.
Where AI changes financial marketing
A bank can use machine learning to segment clients, predict who needs which product and draft campaign texts. The EU AI Act draws a line here: AI systems that assess the creditworthiness of natural persons or price life and health insurance are high-risk under Annex III, with duties on data, documentation and human oversight. A model that only picks which customer sees which ad is outside that list, but the GDPR still governs the data it uses.

What is financial services marketing?
Financial services marketing is the marketing of products from banks, asset managers, insurers, payment firms and fintechs. It differs from other marketing because the products are regulated, and EU law requires marketing communications about investments, funds and crypto-assets to be fair, clear and not misleading.
Who checks financial advertising in Germany?
BaFin. It can prohibit certain types of advertising by banks and financial services institutions under section 23 of the Banking Act, and it supervises the marketing duties of investment firms under the Securities Trading Act. Competitors and consumer associations can also take misleading advertising to court under unfair competition law.
What works in B2B financial services marketing?
Formats that let the buyer test expertise before a sales talk: a webinar on a regulatory change, a report with data, a panel with a bank that already uses the product. A roundtable for a small group of decision makers works when the subject is one the buyers have to solve this year.
