Crypto Marketing Under MiCA
Crypto marketing is the marketing of crypto-assets, stablecoins and crypto services such as custody, trading and tokenization platforms. In the EU it has its own rulebook: the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, MiCA, sets what a marketing communication must say, when it may go out and who checks it. Firms that sell to banks and asset managers face a second question: how to reach institutional buyers who distrust retail-style crypto advertising.
What MiCA requires of crypto marketing
Article 7 of MiCA covers marketing for crypto-assets other than stablecoins. A marketing communication must be clearly identifiable as such, fair, clear and not misleading, and consistent with the crypto-asset white paper. It must say that a white paper has been published, give the website, a phone number and an email address, and carry a prominent statement that no competent authority in the EU has reviewed or approved it and that the offeror alone is responsible for its content. Where a white paper is required, no marketing may go out before the white paper is published.
Stablecoins have parallel articles in the regulation: Article 29 for asset-referenced tokens and Article 53 for e-money tokens, whose marketing must state that holders can redeem at any time and at par value. Article 66 applies the fair, clear and not misleading standard to the information crypto-asset service providers give their clients, marketing included.
Who checks it
The supervisor of the member state where a communication is shown can assess it, not only the supervisor that licensed the firm. A campaign aimed at German users can therefore be checked by BaFin even if the firm holds its CASP license in Austria or Malta. A paid influencer post that does not say it is advertising is hard to square with the first requirement of Article 7. The Finfluencer Circle page describes how finance influencers work in Germany, and MiCA in Germany covers the license side.
Web3 marketing for institutional buyers
Retail web3 marketing runs on social media, airdrops and community channels. Selling custody, tokenization or stablecoin infrastructure to a bank works like other B2B finance marketing: the buyer wants to see the license, the security model, the accounting treatment and the customers who already use it. Panels with a regulated bank, reports and small events carry that message better than token campaigns.
Exchanges and stablecoin issuers have used Finance Loop events for this. Bybit EU and Circle, the issuer of USDC and EURC, held their roadshow in Frankfurt with Finance Loop's support, and OKX Institutional presented the Sibos 2025 side event with Frankfurt Main Finance.
Upcoming Finance Loop events
Crypto marketing with Finance Loop
The Impact Program is Finance Loop's package for digital asset firms, with events, webinars, interviews and a report. Single formats are a sponsored webinar, a sponsored meetup or a hosted event. Partners can reach more than 4,000 members; under MiCA the marketing content stays the partner's responsibility.
What is crypto marketing?
Crypto marketing is marketing for crypto-assets and the firms that issue, trade or hold them. In the EU every marketing communication for a crypto-asset offer falls under MiCA, which requires it to be identifiable, fair, clear and not misleading and to match the white paper.
Does crypto marketing need approval in the EU?
No prior approval is needed. MiCA requires the opposite statement: the communication must say that no competent authority has reviewed or approved it. Supervisors can check it after publication, in each country where it is shown.
What is the difference between crypto and web3 marketing?
The terms overlap. Crypto marketing usually means marketing for tokens and crypto services; web3 marketing also covers apps and protocols built on blockchains, often with community and token incentives. Both fall under MiCA once a crypto-asset is offered to the public in the EU.
