Fintech in Hamburg
This page gives you a working map of fintech in Hamburg: the private banks and the exchange the scene grew from, the startups listed in the city's Fintech Monitor, the events worth your time and where to look for a job or a master program. Dated events on the topic are in the calendar further down.
Hamburg as a finance city
Hamburg's finance scene is older than most people outside the city assume. Berenberg goes back to a trading house the brothers Hans and Paul Berenberg started in Hamburg in the 16th century, and it is still run by personally liable partners. The Hamburg Stock Exchange is the oldest exchange in Germany. Today it belongs to BÖAG Börsen AG, which also runs the exchanges in Düsseldorf and Hannover, where shares, bonds and funds are traded.
Hamburg Commercial Bank, the former HSH Nordbank, lends mainly to shipping, transport, real estate and renewable energy. Hamburger Sparkasse is the city's savings bank. The Deutsche Bundesbank runs its regional office for Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from Willy-Brandt-Strasse.
Trade finance, shipping loans, private banking and insurance explain much of what Hamburg fintechs build. Many of them sell to the companies next door: exporters, online retailers, insurers and asset managers.
Fintech companies in Hamburg
The most complete list of Hamburg fintechs is the Fintech Monitor, kept by Finanzplatz Hamburg e.V., the association that brings the city's financial institutions, business, science and administration together. The monitor names more than 120 companies and sorts them into segments such as payments, banking and savings, retail investment, accounting and taxes, insurance, crypto and trade finance. At the first count there were just over 30 startups. When the number passed 100, Startup City Hamburg reported that 20 of them had money from the city's InnoFinTech funding program.
A few names show the range. Tomorrow is a mobile bank account from Hamburg that keeps customer deposits away from coal and weapons and puts them into projects such as renewable energy and social housing. Taxdoo automates VAT filing for online sellers who ship across the EU and connects to marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay. Finexity runs a platform for tokenized securities on real estate, private equity and other private market assets. The monitor also lists payment firms such as Otto Payments and Payever, the deposit platform Raisin and the portfolio tracker Parqet.
Rules and supervision that apply
A fintech in Hamburg follows the same rules as one in Munich or Frankfurt. BaFin licenses banks, payment institutions and investment firms from its offices in Bonn and Frankfurt; Hamburg has no regulator of its own. Payment startups work under the second Payment Services Directive, PSD2, which also lets licensed providers read bank account data when the customer agrees.
Banks, insurers, payment firms and crypto service providers also fall under DORA, the EU law on digital operational resilience. For a young company that sells software to a Hamburg bank or insurer, DORA shows up in the contract: the customer has to keep a register of its IT providers, test them and have an exit plan. Crypto firms need a license under MiCA.
Fintech jobs and studies in Hamburg
Fintech jobs in Hamburg sit in two places: at the startups in the Fintech Monitor, and in the digital teams of the private banks, Hamburg Commercial Bank, Haspa and the insurers and asset managers in the city. The monitor gives you a list of firms by segment, which is a faster start than a keyword search on a job board.
If you want to study the field, the Hamburg School of Business Administration offers a part-time master in innovation management with a finance track on digital and sustainable finance. The Hamburg Financial Research Center is the academic partner of the region's finance firms. Its annual Hamburg Finance Forum brings researchers, institutional investors and policy makers together on topics such as fixed income, private assets and asset allocation.
