What is performance attribution?

Performance attribution is an analysis that explains why a portfolio returned more or less than a benchmark. It separates the effects of decisions such as asset allocation and security selection. The result helps an investment team assess its process, but an attribution model cannot prove skill by itself.

Performance attribution in brief

MeaningDecomposition of a portfolio's return relative to a reference.
ReferenceA benchmark that fits the mandate and investment universe.
Typical effectsAllocation, security selection, currency and factors.
DataHoldings or transactions, prices, cash flows and benchmark records.
LimitThe answer depends on the model and quality of the input data.

What does performance attribution measure?

It measures the sources of active return: the difference between a portfolio's return and its benchmark. The CFA Research Foundation describes the aim as connecting that difference to the decisions of the portfolio manager. If a portfolio held more of a strong sector than its index, the allocation decision contributed. If its chosen securities within the sector beat the sector reference, selection contributed.

Performance attribution meaning changes with the mandate. An equity manager may use sector effects; a bond manager may examine duration and credit exposure; a multi-asset manager may separate class, currency and manager effects. The model should reflect what the decision maker could actually control.

Which attribution models are used?

Brinson-style models divide relative equity return into allocation and selection effects. Fixed-income and factor models ask different questions. MSCI presents these as separate model families, each tied to a strategy and benchmark. The performance attribution formula is therefore not one universal equation. An analysis example that works for a sector index may fail to explain a credit portfolio.

CFA Institute also distinguishes returns-based, holdings-based and transactions-based calculation. A holdings snapshot can miss an intraperiod trade; transaction data can capture it but needs accurate time stamps and corporate actions. Multi-period reports must connect the effects across intervals without misrepresenting compounding.

How does attribution differ from contribution?

Contribution asks how much each holding or segment added to the portfolio's own return. Attribution asks why it differed from a benchmark. A large holding can contribute positively yet detract from relative performance if the benchmark held even more of an asset that rose. The search phrase performance attribution vs contribution points to this denominator difference.

Neither a contribution table nor an attribution report establishes whether a decision was prudent when made. Markets, timing, costs and the benchmark design affect the observed result. A manager can use attribution to revisit the investment thesis, while an asset owner should also evaluate risk, mandate compliance and repeatability.

What can make an attribution report misleading?

Wrong positions, stale prices and mismatched instrument identifiers can create effects that look like investment decisions. An investment book of record and market-data controls help teams reconcile what was actually held. Benchmark changes, cash flows and pricing lags need their own treatment. An illiquid investment valued monthly should not automatically be compared with a daily traded index.

Professional performance attribution tools support different calculations, but a tool does not choose a defensible benchmark. The CFA reading warns that evaluation has limits and relies on data quality. Reports should disclose the model, period, benchmark and any residual effect and avoid false precision.

Performance attribution in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Attribution is an analytical method, not a separately licensed investment service. The firm using it may still be regulated for portfolio management or investment advice. In Germany, BaFin supervises licensed firms under the relevant EU and national rules, including MiFID II conduct requirements. Austria's FMA oversees investment service providers. Swiss commercial portfolio managers require a FINMA license.

Market and reference data can come from Frankfurt infrastructure such as Deutsche Börse and its Xetra venue. The calculation still has to match the actual mandate, costs and benchmark. This page gives no legal or investment advice.

About Finance Loop: performance attribution

Finance Loop connects asset managers, analysts, data specialists and technology firms across financial centers. Frankfurt's exchange and post-trade infrastructure gives the network a local link to the data and processes behind investment results.

Finteda hosts practitioner conversations in quantitative technology, machine learning and WealthTech, including in Frankfurt. It has worked with Finance Loop on finance-and-technology events, such as the FinTech Founder & Investor Evening. Those connections extend to practitioners in other German and international hubs.
