Securitize and the tokenization of funds

An asset manager that puts a fund share on a blockchain still needs a transfer agent to keep the register, a broker-dealer to sell the share and a venue to trade it. Securitize holds these roles under US securities law and, through a Spanish license, under the EU DLT Pilot Regime. It works with asset managers such as BlackRock, Apollo, Hamilton Lane, KKR and VanEck.

Fund tokenization and investor administration

Securitize provides issuance and administration services for tokenized assets. In the United States it is an SEC-registered broker-dealer, digital transfer agent and fund administrator, and it operates an SEC-regulated alternative trading system. One firm covers issuance, investor onboarding, the register of holders and secondary trading, which is why one analysis calls Securitize the plumbing under tokenized funds.

The best-known fund on the platform is BlackRock's USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, BUIDL, for which Securitize is the tokenization platform and transfer agent. Tokenized money market funds describes how BUIDL holds short-term US Treasury bills and repo and pays its yield on chain.

Securitize in the EU: a trading and settlement system

Spain's securities regulator CNMV authorized Securitize to run a trading and settlement system (TSS) under the EU's DLT Pilot Regime, developed with input from ESMA, the Bank of Spain and the European Central Bank. A TSS combines the roles of a multilateral trading facility and a central securities depository in one system, so a tokenized security trades and settles in the same place. Securitize's Spanish investment firm license, granted in December 2024, has been passported to Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and the European TSS runs on Avalanche.

Funds, credit and its own share on chain

Besides BUIDL, Securitize lists tokenized credit and fixed income funds with managers such as Apollo and Neuberger. The company became a listed firm through a merger with Cantor Equity Partners II and issued a tokenized version of its own share, SECZ, on the day of the listing.
