Tangany: digital asset custody from Munich
Tangany calls itself "Europe's Regulated Digital Asset Custodian". The Munich company, founded in 2018, keeps cryptocurrencies, tokenized securities and other digital assets for banks, trading platforms, corporations and fintechs, and it builds its technology in-house in Germany.
Tangany is an event partner of Finance Loop, and a speaker from Tangany was on the program of Digital Finance Night Frankfurt.
What Tangany does
Tangany sells digital asset custody to other companies. A bank or a broker that wants to offer bitcoin, ether or stablecoins to its customers does not have to hold the private keys itself: Tangany keeps them, and the partner connects its app or platform to Tangany through an API. People call this crypto custody as a service or a white label crypto custody platform. According to Tangany, the company works with more than 60 institutional clients, holds more than 3 billion euros in assets under custody and serves over 700,000 customers in Germany through its partners.
Named clients include eToro, Bitvavo, finanzen.net ZERO and flatexDEGIRO. In September 2025 Tangany raised 10 million euros in a Series A round to extend its custody services across Europe.
The rules for crypto custody in Germany
Custody of crypto-assets is a licensed business in Germany. Since 2021 Tangany has worked as a crypto custodian under the German Banking Act (KWG), supervised by BaFin. In September 2025 it received a license under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) for custody, staking and transfers of crypto-assets. A MiCAR license is valid in every EU country, so a custodian in Munich can serve a partner in France or the Netherlands without a second license there.
In March 2026 BaFin also granted Tangany a payment services license under PSD2 for e-money tokens. E-money tokens are stablecoins that track one official currency, such as a euro stablecoin. Under MiCA, a firm that holds or transfers them for customers may also need a payment license, which is why this license matters for banks that plan euro stablecoin services. Euro stablecoins under MiCA and MiCA rules in Germany explain the background.
What a custodian has to get right
Custody sounds simple: keep the keys safe. In practice a digital asset custodian has to separate client assets from its own, run key management that no single employee can misuse, record every movement for the auditor and apply the travel rule to transfers. The answers What is crypto custody? and Private key vs seed phrase explain the basics, and Crypto custody: how it works compares the routes German banks take.
Banks choose between two routes. Some build custody in-house and apply for their own license, as Deutsche Bank does for a planned offering with bitcoin, ether and stablecoins. Others connect to a specialist such as Tangany and keep the customer relationship, the app and the pricing. Tangany's MiCAR license also covers staking, so a partner can offer staking on proof-of-stake coins such as ether without running validators of its own. Crypto staking explains how staking works and where its risks lie.
What is Tangany?
Tangany GmbH is a crypto custodian in Munich. It holds digital assets for regulated partners such as brokers, banks and trading apps, which offer crypto to their own customers.
Is Tangany regulated by BaFin?
Yes. Tangany holds a crypto custody license from BaFin under the German Banking Act, a MiCAR license for custody, staking and transfers, and a PSD2 payment services license for e-money tokens.
What are digital asset custody services?
Digital asset custody services keep the private keys of crypto-assets on behalf of a client and move the assets on the client's instruction. Digital asset custody providers include banks with their own license and specialists such as Tangany, whose custody solutions other firms connect to their platforms.
What is an e-money token license?
In Germany, a firm that issues e-money tokens needs a license as a bank or an e-money institution. A firm that holds or transfers them for customers may need a payment services license under PSD2. Tangany received such an e-money token license from BaFin in March 2026.
