24/7 trading of stocks and crypto

24/7 trading means that a market accepts and executes orders around the clock, on every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. Crypto-assets have traded this way from the start, and stablecoins and tokenized assets on public blockchains follow the same schedule.

Stock exchanges are extending their hours step by step and have not reached 24/7 trading yet. In the United States, Nasdaq and NYSE plan a 23-hour trading day on five days a week, while payment systems and fund administrators in Europe still work mostly on business days.

24-hour stock trading in the US

The SEC approved the proposal of Nasdaq to trade equities and exchange-traded products 23 hours a day, five days a week, on 10 April 2026, and it has conditionally approved 23/5 trading on 24X, Cboe EDGX, MEMX and NYSE Arca as well. Nasdaq adds a night session from 9 PM to 4 AM Eastern Time to its existing sessions, so trading runs from Sunday 9 PM to Friday 8 PM with a one-hour pause each evening.

The start depends on the market infrastructure behind the exchanges. The processors that publish consolidated quotes and trades for US stocks set 6 December 2026 as their launch date for 23/5 trading, and the clearing house NSCC extended its service to 24 hours on five days in June 2026. The SEC has not approved weekend trading of US stocks so far.

Crypto markets never close

Crypto exchanges and liquidity providers run every hour of the year, and prices move on Sunday night as they do on Tuesday morning. Liquidity is split across many venues, and the same asset can trade at slightly different prices on each of them, most of all in quiet hours. For an institution this means that risk limits and collateral calls have to work at night and on weekends too, with staff on call or with automated rules.

What 24/7 markets mean for funds

A fund that holds crypto-assets values its portfolio at a fixed valuation point, because investors need a net asset value and reports at set dates. The administrator takes a snapshot of positions and prices at that moment, and trades after the snapshot belong to the next valuation. The valuation policy names the price source and the time in advance, so a price move on a Saturday does not start a debate on Monday about which price counts.

Subscriptions and redemptions follow the dealing days of the fund, and most crypto funds deal monthly or daily on business days. Tokenized funds can accept orders on a blockchain at any hour, but the issue of new units still follows the cut-off time in the fund documents.

Payments and settlement outside business hours

A market that trades around the clock needs money that moves at the same hours. The Eurosystem service TIPS settles instant payments in central bank money 24 hours a day on 365 days a year, while the large-value system T2 runs on business days, and the Eurosystem is exploring longer operating hours for T2 in its payments strategy. Stablecoins settle on blockchains at any hour, so trading firms use them to move collateral between venues on weekends.

Upcoming events on digital assets and trading

Can you trade stocks 24/7?

US exchanges do not offer 24/7 trading yet, because the planned 23/5 schedule keeps a pause every evening and the weekend closed. Some brokers offer overnight trading of US stocks through alternative trading systems, and in Europe several venues for retail investors trade shares from early morning to late evening on business days. Tokenized stocks that track listed shares trade on crypto platforms around the clock, but their price can move away from the share price while the home exchange is closed.

Risks of round-the-clock trading

Night and weekend sessions have thinner order books, so a large order moves the price further and spreads are wider. News that breaks on a Saturday hits crypto prices at once, while related stocks react only when their exchange opens. Trading firms set tighter limits for the hours when fewer people watch the market and route large orders to the main session.
