AI Training for Employees
AI training for employees teaches staff to use AI tools correctly in their own work, from chat assistants to coding agents and the AI features in banking software. In the EU it is also a legal duty. Article 4 of the EU AI Act has applied since February 2, 2025 and requires firms that provide or use AI systems to take measures for the AI literacy of their staff; national market surveillance authorities supervise it from August 2026.
What Article 4 requires
The European Commission's AI literacy Q&A describes the rule as amended by the Digital Omnibus on AI, which entered into force in mid-July 2026. AI literacy remains an obligation for providers and deployers of AI systems, but the law no longer mandates a specific or "sufficient" level. The duty covers staff and other persons who deal with AI systems on the firm's behalf, such as contractors. No certificate is needed; an internal record of trainings and guidance is enough, and no AI officer is required.
A firm that deploys a high-risk AI system, such as a model that scores the creditworthiness of natural persons, must still make sure the staff who oversee it are trained for that oversight. The EU AI Act in finance explains which systems count as high-risk.
What to train, by role
A clerk who drafts letters with a chat assistant needs to know that the model can state a wrong fact with confidence, and which customer data the firm's policy keeps out of a prompt. An analyst who works with research or contract files learns to make the model cite its source and to check each figure against it. Staff who oversee a credit or insurance pricing model learn its limits and when to override it. Developers who use coding agents review generated code the way they would review a colleague's pull request.
How to record AI training
Keep a list of who was trained, when, on which tools and at which level, and update it when a new tool arrives. In a bank this record belongs to the governance work that AI governance in banking describes.

AI training with Finance Loop
Finance Loop runs private workshops for teams, in English or German, at the firm's own location or in a European financial center. Open formats such as the Claude Hacker House let single employees learn hands-on next to people from other firms. Is AI training mandatory for employees in the EU?
Firms that provide or use AI systems must take measures for the AI literacy of their staff under Article 4 of the EU AI Act. The law does not prescribe a course, but training is the usual measure, and firms that deploy high-risk AI must train the staff who oversee it.
Do employees need an AI literacy certificate?
No. The European Commission states that no certificate is needed and that an internal record of trainings and other measures is enough.
Who checks AI literacy?
National market surveillance authorities, not the EU AI Office, from August 2026. For AI that German banks use in regulated business, BaFin is the supervisor, as AI in banking in Germany explains.
