Why bitcoin is its own asset class
Bitcoin's supply is fixed by its own code, not by a company or a central bank. The block subsidy that creates new bitcoin halves roughly every four years, and Bitcoin Core rejects any total above 21 million coins, a hard cap no monetary authority can raise the way a central bank can expand a currency supply. That fixed scarcity has no equivalent in equities, bonds or fiat money, where supply grows through new issuance or policy decisions, and it is the reason institutional allocators size bitcoin as its own category, separate from a broader crypto or technology allocation.
Demand from regulated products now backs that argument with flow data from Frankfurt's own market. The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF held close to 67 billion US dollars in net assets as of late September 2026, a scale of institutional buying that has shifted bitcoin's price drivers from mining supply toward institutional demand. Frankfurt's own Deutsche Börse lists crypto ETPs alongside its traditional products, giving a German investor a regulated venue for that same exposure without leaving the city's exchange infrastructure.
Custody moves onto Frankfurt's balance sheets
Frankfurt's banks are turning bitcoin custody from a specialist service into a mainstream banking product. DekaBank, owned by the German savings bank sector, received approval from BaFin and the European Central Bank to offer crypto custody, and Sparkasse customers can trade crypto through the DekaBank-supplied products in their banking app. Clearstream, the settlement arm of Deutsche Börse Group, offers institutional bitcoin and ether custody through existing Clearstream accounts, with Crypto Finance (Deutschland) as the MiCA-licensed sub-custodian, and added six more cryptocurrencies to that offering in mid-2026.
Crypto custody (Kryptoverwahrgeschäft) has been a licensed financial service in Germany since January 1, 2020, and since MiCA applied in full from December 30, 2024, a crypto-asset service provider needs authorization under both frameworks, a level of regulatory overlap that favors established Frankfurt custodians over smaller, unlicensed platforms.
The risks a professional investor weighs
The same scarcity that supports bitcoin's asset-class case drives its volatility, since no issuer can add supply in response to demand and price swings run entirely on the demand side. The IMF found that bitcoin's correlation with the S&P 500 rose more than four-fold after 2020 compared with the three years before it, a shift that changes how a portfolio manager models bitcoin against equities.
Regulators have not softened their warnings as adoption has grown. ESMA states that MiCA carries no investor compensation scheme, so a client has no safety net if a licensed provider cannot return the assets it holds. A BaFin survey from 2026 found that more than half of German crypto holders incorrectly believed bitcoin protects against inflation, a misconception BaFin attributes directly to the asset's volatility.
MiCA, tax and what a Frankfurt investor should know
Under MiCA, bitcoin itself needs no issuer authorization, since MiCA's white-paper duty exempts a crypto-asset created as a mining reward. BaFin's own reading treats bitcoin the same way for assets with no identifiable issuer: the asset is unregulated, but the exchanges and custodians that trade and hold it for customers need a license.
For a private investor, a sale of bitcoin held for more than one year stays tax free under section 23 of the Einkommensteuergesetz, with no cap on the gain. That holding-period exemption applies across Germany, not only in Frankfurt, though a draft bill from the Federal Ministry of Finance would replace it with a flat withholding tax from 2027.
