CoinDesk Data
CoinDesk Data is the market data business of CoinDesk and sells trade, order book and onchain data on digital assets to banks, exchanges and index providers. It covers more than 300 centralized and decentralized exchanges, over 10,000 coins and more than 300,000 trading pairs. Its price history for some assets goes back to 2010.
Until 2024 the business traded as CCData, and its website for private investors was CryptoCompare. CoinDesk announced the acquisition of CCData and CryptoCompare on 16 October 2024, and the data business has carried the CoinDesk name since then.
Data API and historical data
Clients reach the data through the CoinDesk Data API, through streaming connections and as historical files. According to CoinDesk Data, its order book data covers up to 99.8 percent of the industry, and its onchain data covers Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains. The former CryptoCompare API, which many developers used for years, now runs under the CoinDesk Data name.
Exchange Benchmark
Since 2019 the company has published an Exchange Benchmark that rates more than 150 exchanges on more than 80 metrics. Banks, index providers and funds use the ranking to decide which exchanges count for a price or a valuation.
Calculation for CoinDesk Indices
CoinDesk Data calculates the benchmarks of CoinDesk Indices, including the CoinDesk 20. As CCData the company was itself a UK FCA-regulated benchmark administrator. MarketVector launched its first crypto indices with CryptoCompare in 2017, and VanEck and MarketVector later made a strategic investment in CCData.
