CoinDesk Indices has published indices since 2014 and now runs more than 400 benchmarks that comply with the EU Benchmarks Regulation. It reports more than 40 billion dollars of assets under management that track its indices, and its controls carry ISO 27001 certification and SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II reports.
CoinDesk 20 Index
The CoinDesk 20 Index, short CD20, follows twenty large digital assets selected under a published methodology and weighted by market capitalization with caps. ProShares lists the ProShares CoinDesk 20 Crypto ETF under the ticker KRYP in the United States. In Europe, WisdomTree issues the WisdomTree Physical CoinDesk 20 ETP, which holds the coins of the index with a custodian.
CoinDesk 5 Index
The CoinDesk 5 Index takes the five largest constituents of the CoinDesk 20, weights them by market capitalization and rebalances them every quarter. It suits a product that wants a narrower basket than the twenty assets of the CD20.
Bitcoin Price Index (XBX)
The CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index, XBX, has the longest history of any digital asset index, according to CoinDesk Indices. Newsrooms and financial firms quote it as a bitcoin price aggregated across several exchanges, and fund issuers use the related reference rates for valuation.
Data from CoinDesk Data
The exchange data for the indices comes from CoinDesk Data, the former CCData, which joined CoinDesk in 2024. Both units belong to CoinDesk, so one group now runs the index methodology, the calculation and the underlying market data.
