Crypto ETP

An exchange-traded product, or ETP, lets an investor buy exposure to an asset through a normal stock exchange account instead of opening a separate account with a crypto exchange. A crypto ETP tracks the price of bitcoin, ether or a basket of digital assets and settles the same way any other listed security does. Deutsche Börse's Xetra is one of Europe's main listing venues for these products.

What a crypto ETP actually holds

Most crypto ETPs in Europe are physically backed: the issuer buys and holds the actual bitcoin, ether or other tokens the product tracks, in cold storage with a regulated custodian, and each share of the ETP represents a claim on that pool. This differs from an ETP that instead uses derivatives or swaps to replicate a price, which carries counterparty risk to whoever is on the other side of the contract. A prospectus states which model a specific ETP uses, and the physically backed structure is the one that dominates the European market. An investor checking a specific ETP can also look up its total expense ratio and its custody arrangement, both published in the product's factsheet, before comparing it against a competing issuer's version of the same underlying asset.

ETP, ETN and ETF: the naming differs by product structure

In Europe, most crypto exchange-traded products are legally structured as exchange-traded notes (ETNs), a debt instrument issued by the ETP provider. An ETF is a fund that holds the underlying assets directly and is regulated under fund law such as UCITS. Crypto does not qualify as an eligible UCITS asset under current EU rules, so no European issuer runs a crypto product in true ETF form today. For a buyer the effect is small: a crypto ETN still trades on an exchange, prices continuously during market hours, and settles through the same custody chain as a stock.

The European market: 21Shares and its competitors

21Shares, a Swiss issuer, launched the world's first physically backed crypto basket ETP in 2018 and now offers more than 40 products, with roughly 8 billion US dollars in global assets under management. The firm generated more than 4.6 billion euros in Xetra turnover in 2025 alone, and its total secondary-market turnover across European exchanges grew 56 percent that year to more than 11.9 billion euros. Competitors such as CoinShares also cross-list physically backed products on Xetra, giving European investors several issuers to compare on fees, tracked assets and custody arrangements before choosing a product.

Why an institution might choose an ETP over direct custody

A crypto ETP settles through the same custody chain, clearing system and reporting infrastructure an institution already uses for every other listed security, so it avoids the extra operational setup that direct crypto custody requires. A 2026 survey of institutional investors found spot crypto ETPs to be the most common access route to the asset class, chosen by two out of three respondents. The tradeoff is that an ETP holder does not control the underlying private keys and pays the product's ongoing management fee, unlike a firm that runs its own licensed custody.

What is a crypto ETP?

A crypto ETP is an exchange-traded product that tracks the price of bitcoin, ether or another digital asset, or a basket of several, and trades on a regulated stock exchange the same way a share does. Most European crypto ETPs are physically backed by the actual tokens they track.

What is the difference between a crypto ETP and a crypto ETF?

In Europe, most crypto exchange-traded products are legally structured as exchange-traded notes, because crypto does not qualify as an eligible asset under UCITS fund rules. "ETP" is the accurate umbrella term for these products. Calling one an ETF describes how it trades on an exchange, which its legal structure as a note does not.

Where can I buy a crypto ETP in Europe?

Crypto ETPs from issuers such as 21Shares and CoinShares list on regulated exchanges including Deutsche Börse's Xetra, and an investor buys them through a normal brokerage or bank securities account, the same way they would buy any other listed security.
