MoonPay

MoonPay is a financial technology company that lets people buy, sell and send crypto assets with everyday payment methods such as cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and bank transfers. Wallets, exchanges and other apps build the MoonPay on-ramp and off-ramp into their own products, so their users can turn money into crypto assets and back without leaving the app.

For these partners, MoonPay runs the identity checks and the fraud screening and handles the exchange between fiat currency and crypto assets. In the European Union, MoonPay Europe B.V. in Amsterdam holds an authorization under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) and, since September 2026, a Dutch electronic money license that also covers the issuance of stablecoins.

On-ramp and off-ramp for apps, wallets and exchanges

MoonPay sells its crypto on-ramp and off-ramp to businesses in two technical forms. The hosted widget is a ready checkout that a partner embeds and that picks up new payment methods automatically. With headless ramps, the partner connects the user to a MoonPay account, fetches payment methods, quotes and limits through the API and designs the checkout in its own interface. MoonPay runs fraud checks, chargebacks, KYC and sanctions screening itself, and across its ramp volume 80 percent of started purchases and 83 percent of started sales reach completion.

In an off-ramp sale, the user chooses the crypto asset, the fiat currency, the amount and a payout method, passes the KYC check on first use and confirms the sale. The partner app then sends the crypto assets to MoonPay on behalf of the user, and the deposit has to arrive within 48 hours, otherwise the transaction fails. Sellers receive the money on a bank account, a card or their MoonPay Balance, while merchants that want to accept crypto payments at checkout use a separate product called MoonPay Commerce.

Acquisitions: Helio, Iron and Meso

In January 2025, MoonPay bought Helio, a crypto payment processor built on Solana that had more than 6,000 merchants and had handled more than $1.5 billion in transactions. Helio connects to Discord, WooCommerce and Shopify and gives developers an API for their own onchain checkout flows. With MoonPay Commerce, merchants accept crypto and stablecoin payments and settle them in crypto, in stablecoins or, where supported, in US dollars, euros or pounds.

In March 2025, MoonPay acquired Iron, an API-first stablecoin infrastructure platform for multi-currency treasuries and instant cross-border payments. In September 2025, MoonPay announced the purchase of Meso, a company founded in 2022 to connect traditional finance with crypto. The Meso co-founders Ali Aghareza and Ben Mills joined MoonPay as Chief Technology Officer and as Senior Vice President of Product, and both had worked at Braintree before. MoonPay describes Helio, Iron and Meso as parts of one global payments network that connects banks, card networks, stablecoins and blockchains under one regulatory framework.

Stablecoin infrastructure for businesses

MoonPay launched MoonPay Enterprise in August 2026 on the technology of Iron, as one integration for four stablecoin services. Pay In works as a stablecoin on-ramp for companies: it collects fiat money over SEPA, ACH, FPS, PIX or SWIFT into virtual accounts and converts it into stablecoins. Convert supplies stablecoin liquidity for treasury and large OTC trades, Pay Out sends stablecoins or local currency to recipients, and Issue mints fully reserved stablecoins under the brand of the business that issues them. MoonPay names Deel for stablecoin payroll and Paysafe for crypto checkout at merchants as users of these stablecoin payments, with payouts possible in more than 190 countries.

Together with Mastercard, MoonPay announced in May 2025 that fintechs and enterprises can offer Mastercard cards tied to the stablecoin balances of their users. Cardholders spend their stablecoins at more than 150 million locations that accept Mastercard, and the stablecoin card converts them into fiat currency at the point of sale. Iron supplies the stablecoin infrastructure behind this partnership, which also covers payouts to gig workers, contractors and creators.

MiCA authorization and the Dutch e-money license

The Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) authorized MoonPay Europe B.V. as a crypto-asset service provider on 30 December 2024, the day MiCA became fully applicable. The ESMA register of crypto-asset service providers lists three authorized services: exchange of crypto-assets for funds, exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets, and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients. Under the MiCA passport for Europe, the register shows the authorization in all 30 countries of the European Economic Area, Germany, Austria and France included.

In September 2026, De Nederlandsche Bank granted MoonPay Europe an electronic money institution license for custodial payment flows, payment accounts for consumers and businesses, and the issuance of stablecoins, which opens the market for euro-denominated stablecoins to MoonPay. MoonPay counts itself as the third company based in the Netherlands to hold a CASP authorization and an EMI license in one entity. In the United States, MoonPay holds money transmitter licenses and a New York BitLicense.

What is MoonPay and how does it work?

MoonPay is a crypto on-ramp and off-ramp: a person pays with a card, a mobile wallet or a bank transfer and receives crypto assets such as bitcoin, or sells crypto assets and receives money on a bank account or card. MoonPay has served millions of customers since 2019 and counts more than 35 million accounts created.

Is MoonPay regulated?

MoonPay is regulated in several jurisdictions, and in the EU, MoonPay Europe B.V. holds a MiCA authorization from the Dutch AFM and an electronic money license from De Nederlandsche Bank. In the United States, MoonPay holds a New York BitLicense and money transmitter licenses, and it also holds licenses or registrations in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Jersey.

Availability in Germany

Customers in Germany can use MoonPay through MoonPay Europe B.V., because the ESMA register lists Germany among the host countries of its MiCA authorization. The supervisor for this authorization is the AFM in the Netherlands, and under the MiCA rules in Germany such a passported provider needs no separate German license. MoonPay Europe B.V. has its registered address at Herengracht 420, 1017 BZ Amsterdam.

Payment methods for buying and selling

Buyers pay with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and PayPal, Venmo and bank transfers are available in selected regions. Sellers receive the money on a bank account, a card or their MoonPay Balance, and MoonPay supports bank transfers in euros, pounds and US dollars for purchases and sales.

Ramp and payments APIs for developers

The MoonPay API runs the headless on-ramp and off-ramp, where a partner links a user account, fetches payment methods, quotes and limits, and builds the purchase screens itself. For stablecoin payouts, treasury and stablecoin issuance, businesses connect to MoonPay Enterprise, which bundles Pay In, Convert, Pay Out and Issue in one integration.
