R3 and Corda
The Swiss National Bank settled digital bonds in wholesale central bank money on a Corda platform. R3, the company behind Corda, builds it as a permissioned ledger for regulated markets, where banks and market infrastructures know who they transact with. SIX Digital Exchange, the Swiss National Bank's Project Helvetia and the HQLAX collateral registry run on it.
Corda's distributed ledger for finance
R3 describes Corda as an open, permissioned DLT platform for the tokenization of assets and currencies, used by governments, central banks and financial institutions. In its own reporting, Corda-based platforms passed 10 billion US dollars in real-world assets on chain, a figure R3 later raised to 17 billion. The written input R3 sent to the SEC's crypto task force calls Corda the largest ecosystem of live, regulated on-chain assets.
A Corda transaction consumes existing states and creates new ones, and it is committed once it is valid under its contract and signed by the required parties. A notary service checks that no input state is spent twice and signs the transaction or rejects it.
Settlement in central bank money: Project Helvetia
In Project Helvetia Phase III, the Swiss National Bank issued wholesale central bank digital currency on the platform of SIX Digital Exchange, which is powered by Corda. A digital bond issued on SDX settled against that wholesale CBDC, so the bond and the money moved on the same ledger. R3 also took part in wholesale CBDC experiments of the Banque de France. Wholesale CBDC explains the model.
Repo and collateral: HQLAX and Fnality
HQLAX runs its registry for digital collateral on Corda. In an interoperability pilot, HQLAX and Fnality settled an intraday repo across two ledgers: the securities leg moved in the HQLAX registry on Corda, and the cash leg in the Fnality Payment System on a private Ethereum network. The trade completed only when both systems confirmed their side, as Fnality describes it.

What is R3 Corda?
Corda is a permissioned distributed ledger platform developed by R3 for regulated financial markets. Banks, market infrastructures and central banks use it to issue and settle tokenized assets and money.
Is Corda a blockchain?
Corda is a distributed ledger. Transactions consume and create states, the required parties sign them, and a notary service confirms that no input was spent twice. With the Solana link, Corda transactions can also be confirmed on a public blockchain.
Who uses Corda?
SIX Digital Exchange, the HQLAX collateral registry and central bank projects such as the Swiss National Bank's Project Helvetia run on Corda.
Does Corda have its own coin?
No. Corda is a permissioned platform without a native coin. Payments on Corda networks use tokenized central bank money, tokenized deposits or, through the Solana link, stablecoins.
