StoneX
StoneX is a financial services group from the United States, listed on Nasdaq as StoneX Group Inc., that started in 1924 with hedging for futures and commodity contracts. StoneX provides clearing, execution, commodities, securities, foreign exchange and payments to more than 54,000 institutional, commercial and payments clients from more than 70 offices on six continents.
StoneX Digital is the digital asset unit of the group and has given institutional and corporate clients access to crypto trading since 2022. The Irish company StoneX Digital International Limited received a MiCA authorization from the Central Bank of Ireland in December 2025, which covers custody, trading and transfers for clients across the European Union.
A century in commodities and markets
StoneX began in 1924 as a firm for hedging futures and commodity contracts and grew into a listed group for clearing, execution and payments. Beyond its 54,000 institutional and commercial clients it serves more than 260,000 self-directed clients, and in August 2025 it completed the purchase of the US clearing broker RJ O'Brien.
For banks and corporates the group is a counterparty in futures, metals, foreign exchange and over-the-counter products. StoneX Digital extends this relationship to crypto assets, so that a client can trade digital assets with the same group that clears its futures or handles its currency payments.
StoneX Digital and its MiCA authorization from Ireland
The Central Bank of Ireland authorized StoneX Digital International Limited on 19 December 2025 as a crypto-asset service provider under Article 63 of MiCA, and StoneX announced the license on 6 January 2026. The authorization covers custody and administration of crypto assets, exchange of crypto assets for funds and for other crypto assets, execution and reception and transmission of orders for clients and transfer services.
The ESMA interim MiCA register lists passport notifications for 29 further countries of the EU and the EEA, which include Germany, France and Italy. Brian Mulcahy leads StoneX Digital as chief executive, and Stuart Davison, chief operating officer of StoneX Group, tied the license to the plan to bring new products to existing clients.
What institutions and corporates use StoneX Digital for
An asset manager, a bank or a corporate treasury can trade crypto assets through StoneX Digital and keep them in custody with the same provider. Because the license includes reception and transmission of orders, StoneX can also pass client orders on to other firms for execution.
For a European client the MiCA license means that the counterparty is authorized by the Central Bank of Ireland and listed in the ESMA register. Questions on segregation of client assets, settlement and the credit lines between client and broker stay part of the due diligence.
