Trade Republic

Trade Republic is a German bank in Berlin that runs a savings and investment platform for private customers in a smartphone app and on the web. Customers buy shares, ETFs, bonds, derivatives and crypto, set up savings plans from small amounts and hold a current account with a debit card. Christian Hecker, Thomas Pischke and Marco Cancellieri founded the company in 2015.

Trade Republic launched its app in 2019 and received a full banking license from the European Central Bank in 2023. The bank serves more than ten million customers in 18 European countries, who held more than 150 billion euro in assets with it at the end of 2025. Seventy percent of these customers invest in the capital market for the first time.

Banking license and supervision

Trade Republic Bank GmbH holds a full banking license that the European Central Bank granted in 2023. BaFin supervises the bank together with the Deutsche Bundesbank, and customer deposits fall under the German statutory deposit guarantee of up to 100,000 euro per person.

With the license and its own securities settlement system, Trade Republic opened national branches in France, Spain and Italy in January 2025. Customers in these countries receive a local IBAN and current account, and French customers can hold the tax-advantaged PEA savings account with commission-free savings plans. In 2025 the bank also adapted its offering for the Netherlands and Austria.

Founders and leadership

Christian Hecker, Thomas Pischke and Marco Cancellieri founded Trade Republic in 2015 (in German). The three founders launched the app in Germany in 2019 with the stated mission of helping to close the pension gap in Europe. Co-founder Christian Hecker speaks for the bank in its announcements on customer growth, new products and funding rounds.

Headquarters in Berlin

Trade Republic Bank GmbH has its headquarters at Brunnenstraße 19-21 in 10119 Berlin. Berlin is also home to other neobanks with their own licenses, while most established German banks have their head offices in Frankfurt. From Berlin, Trade Republic serves customers in 18 European markets, and more than one third of them lived outside Germany in January 2025.

Valuation, investors and results

In December 2025, investors bought shares from early shareholders for 1.2 billion euro at a valuation of 12.5 billion euro. Founders Fund led this secondary round together with Sequoia, Accel, TCV and Thrive Capital, and Wellington Management, GIC, Fidelity and Khosla Ventures joined as new shareholders. Across its earlier funding rounds, Trade Republic raised more than one billion euro in primary capital.

In the fiscal year that ended in September 2025, the bank reported revenue of about 754 million euro and a net profit of about 232.6 million euro (in German). The net profit of the previous year was 34.8 million euro, and Trade Republic has now been profitable for three years in a row.

Savings plans, card and private markets

The product range of Trade Republic covers savings plans and fractional trading of shares and ETFs, plus bonds, derivatives, crypto and private markets. The Trade Republic card is a debit card that invests 1 percent of each card payment in a savings plan, which the bank calls Saveback. Trade Republic passes the interest rate of the European Central Bank on to customer deposits in full.

In September 2025 the bank added private market funds from Apollo and EQT, which customers can buy from one euro and sell once a month on an internal marketplace. The funds themselves require a minimum of 10,000 euro and allow redemptions only once a quarter.
