What AI does in Frankfurt's banks today

Frankfurt hosts the head offices of Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, the Deutsche Börse Group, the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank, so AI projects in finance often start there before they reach the rest of the country. Most of the work is less dramatic than the word "AI" suggests. In EU securities markets, most reported uses help staff draft and summarize text, with a person approving the result before it goes out, and asset management follows the same pattern.

Supervision runs from Frankfurt too. ECB Banking Supervision, which oversees the significant banks of the euro area, has deployed more than a dozen suptech tools of its own, among them Heimdall, which reads fit and proper questionnaires, and Athena, which searches supervisory documents by natural language processing. A bank in Frankfurt that submits data to the ECB is dealing with an AI-assisted process on the other side of the desk as well. The suptech in Europe page goes through these tools in detail.

The rules AI teams in Frankfurt work under

A bank in Frankfurt that puts a model into a credit decision answers to BaFin, which supervises AI that supervised firms use in direct connection with regulated financial activities under the German Act Implementing the European Artificial Intelligence Act. Before that act, BaFin had already published its own principles for the use of algorithms in decision-making processes, which split a model's life into development and application and ask for a named owner at every step. The EU AI Act in finance page covers the high-risk lines on credit scoring and insurance pricing in full.

The insurance side has its own supervisor close by: EIOPA, the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, sits at Westhafenplatz 1 in Frankfurt and published an Opinion on AI governance and risk management for AI used in pricing, underwriting, claims and fraud detection.

Where to study and work on AI in finance in Frankfurt

Frankfurt School of Finance & Management runs a Master of Artificial Intelligence & Data Science over four semesters and 120 ECTS credits, timed for people who work alongside it, with company projects run together with firms such as Deutsche Börse Group and PwC. The school reports that about 30 percent of a recent class started in banking after graduating. The data science in finance page has more on the program and on the Bundesbank's research data center for banking data.

For people already working, Frankfurt Data Science runs meetups that mix short talks with informal discussion, several of them hosted at TechQuartier. AI jobs in Frankfurt finance sit inside the banks and insurers named above, at consultancies that build models for them, and at fintechs that sell AI tools into the sector. Claude Hacker House is a separate route in: developers and finance people build working prototypes with Claude over one evening.

What is AI used for in finance?

Most AI in finance handles tasks such as drafting and summarizing text, answering routine customer questions and flagging unusual transactions for a human to review.
