Airwallex

Airwallex is a payments and financial platform for companies that sell, buy and employ people in several countries. One Airwallex account gives a business local bank details in more than 20 currencies, so customers abroad can pay it like a domestic supplier, and the money can be converted and sent on to more than 200 countries and regions. Airwallex was founded in Melbourne in 2015 and now has two headquarters, in Singapore and San Francisco.

Around the account, Airwallex issues multi-currency Visa cards to employees, handles expenses and supplier bills, and accepts card and wallet payments for online shops. Software platforms and fintechs use the same functions through an API to offer accounts, payouts and cards to their own customers. In Europe, Airwallex holds licenses as an electronic money institution in the UK, the Netherlands and Lithuania.

Business accounts, FX and international transfers

The core product is the business account: a company collects money in more than 20 currencies on local account details and keeps the balances side by side in one wallet. Because the details are local, a customer abroad pays with a domestic transfer instead of an international wire, much like with a virtual IBAN. Under the UK pricing, the Explore plan costs £19 a month, and Airwallex waives the fee for a business that deposits or holds at least £10,000 in that month.

For B2B cross-border payments, Airwallex sends money to more than 200 countries and regions, and one batch transfer can pay up to 1,000 recipients. Airwallex routes a payment through its own local payout network where it can and falls back on a SWIFT transfer otherwise. Of all Airwallex transfers, 93 percent settle on the same day and half arrive instantly. In the UK, a currency conversion costs 0.5 percent above the interbank rate for major currencies and 1 percent for all other currencies.

Visa corporate cards and spend management

Airwallex issues multi-currency Visa corporate cards as company cards for shared costs such as software subscriptions and as employee cards for travel and other work purchases. A card pays from the wallet balance in the currency of the purchase, so a payment in US dollars draws on dollars the company already holds, and Airwallex charges no foreign transaction fee. Virtual cards work online as soon as they are created, and employees can also pay with physical cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The cards belong to Airwallex Spend, a spend management product with expense reports, reimbursements, bill payments and purchase orders. AI reads receipts and supplier bills and sorts card expenses into categories, and the transactions sync with Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite. For platforms, Airwallex issues cards through an API in more than 60 markets as a principal member of Visa, including single-use cards for supplier payments.

Payment acceptance for online merchants

With Airwallex Payments, a merchant can accept cards, wallets and more than 160 local payment methods from customers in over 180 countries. Airwallex works as payment gateway, processor and acquirer in one, with local acquiring in more than 35 markets, so domestic cards in those markets avoid cross-border fees. A merchant can settle sales in the currency the customer paid in and use that balance to pay suppliers, which saves converting the money home and back again.

Merchants connect through payment links, plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento, a prebuilt checkout or a fully custom integration through the API. Buy now, pay later comes from Klarna, which merchants can add as a payment method in their Airwallex account. Optimize 360, the optimization layer of Airwallex Payments, retries failed payments and scores fraud risk in real time to raise approval rates and cut chargebacks.

Licenses in the UK and the EU

Airwallex (UK) Limited has been an authorized electronic money institution of the Financial Conduct Authority since 26 November 2018, with firm reference number 900876. In the EU, Airwallex (Netherlands) B.V. has held an e-money license from De Nederlandsche Bank since 30 April 2021, under relation number R179622, and passports it across the European Economic Area. Customer money at the Dutch company is held by a separate foundation, Airwallex Netherlands Stichting, as Dutch safeguarding law requires.

A second EU license sits in Lithuania, where AWX Lithuania, UAB has been an electronic money institution of the Bank of Lithuania since 6 October 2021, under license number 88. Airwallex Capital (Netherlands) B.V. has been an investment firm supervised by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets since 31 July 2025. Worldwide, Airwallex counts more than 85 licenses and registrations and 27 offices.

Offices and investment in Europe

London is the regional hub of Airwallex for Europe and the Middle East, and the London team has moved into an office of more than 16,000 square feet in Fitzrovia. In December 2025, Airwallex announced US$590 million of investment in its UK business from 2026 to 2030, which raises UK headcount from about 100 to more than 160 by the end of 2026. In March 2026, Airwallex announced US$1.135 billion for the UK and the rest of the region by 2030, after its revenue in the region had grown 116 percent year on year in the fourth quarter of 2025.

On the continent, Airwallex runs offices in Amsterdam and Vilnius, and Amsterdam is the statutory seat of its Dutch e-money company. In December 2024, Airwallex opened an office in the ninth arrondissement of Paris. Christos Chamberlain, formerly General Manager of the logistics company Flexport, leads the UK and European business, and Airwallex planned multi-million dollar investments in the Netherlands, France and Germany for early 2026.

Is Airwallex a bank?

Airwallex is not a bank, and its business accounts are run by licensed e-money and payment companies that work with partner banks. An e-money license allows a company to issue electronic money and provide payment services but not to take deposits, so Airwallex safeguards customer funds under the rules of each country. Airwallex also complies with the security standards PCI DSS, SOC 1 and SOC 2 for card data and internal controls.

Platform APIs and embedded finance

Platforms and fintechs build on Airwallex through its platform APIs, which open connected accounts for their own customers and handle payments, currency conversion, payouts and card issuing. A marketplace can onboard its sellers this way and move money between their accounts without a payment facilitator registration of its own, which is the model of embedded finance.

Yield on business balances

Airwallex Yield pays a daily return on balances that a business moves into AAA-rated money market funds, such as funds of J.P. Morgan Asset Management. The money can be withdrawn at any time without a lock-up period, and for customers of Airwallex (Netherlands) B.V. the product comes from Airwallex Capital (Netherlands) B.V., the Dutch investment firm of the group.

Founders, investors and valuation

Jack Zhang, co-founder and CEO, started Airwallex in Melbourne in 2015 with a few fellow entrepreneurs, after they had run into slow and costly foreign payments while buying supplies abroad for their coffee shop. In June 2026, Airwallex raised US$320 million in a Series H round led by Addition at a valuation of US$11 billion, with Baillie Gifford, T. Rowe Price and Amex Ventures among the other investors. Annualized revenue had reached US$1.3 billion in March 2026, and by June Airwallex served more than 676,000 businesses directly or through its platform customers.
