Bitcoin in Stuttgart
In Stuttgart, bitcoin is a product of the local stock exchange: Börse Stuttgart launched the Bison app and the trading venue BSDEX in 2019. Below are the reasons professionals hold bitcoin as an asset class of its own, the risks, the ways to buy it through the Stuttgart exchange group and the places where the city's bitcoin crowd meets.
Why bitcoin is an asset class of its own
Bitcoin has a supply rule and no issuer. The Bitcoin whitepaper creates new coins only as the reward for each new block, the reward halves about every four years, and the reference software rejects amounts above 21 million BTC. A company can issue new shares and a central bank can create more money; for bitcoin, nobody has that switch. Investors who give bitcoin its own line in a portfolio, next to equities, bonds and gold, start from that difference.
The second reason is access through regulated products. Spot bitcoin ETFs trade in the United States, among them BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, and European investors buy exchange-traded products. The third is how the price behaves: an IMF note found that bitcoin moved largely on its own before the pandemic and much more closely with US equities after it. A portfolio model therefore needs bitcoin's own volatility and correlation figures.
Bison, BSDEX and custody from Stuttgart
Börse Stuttgart started Bison (in German) in January 2019 as the first crypto trading app in Europe with a traditional securities exchange behind it; the app lists 63 cryptocurrencies, bitcoin among them. In December 2019 the group opened BSDEX, which it calls Germany's first regulated trading venue for cryptocurrencies. BSDEX is a multilateral trading facility for private investors, who use its app, and for institutional participants. Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody holds the coins in trust and does not lend them to third parties.
The group bundled these businesses in Boerse Stuttgart Digital in 2023, and about 1.2 million end customers used its crypto offers in 2025. Banks use the same infrastructure: in meinKrypto, the crypto wallet of DZ BANK in the banking app of the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken, Boerse Stuttgart Digital keeps the coins and EUWAX AG executes the orders. A bitcoin bought there is traded and held in Stuttgart.
The risks an investor weighs
A fixed supply does not make the price stable. When demand shifts, no issuer adds or removes coins, so the price takes the whole move. ESMA warns that crypto investors can lose all the money they put in and that MiCA has no compensation scheme like the deposit guarantee for bank accounts.
The second risk is custody. Whoever controls the private key controls the coins, so a lost key or a hacked platform means lost bitcoin, and the choice between a wallet of your own and a licensed custodian comes first. On tax, a private investor in Germany pays no income tax on a bitcoin sale more than one year after the purchase under section 23 of the Income Tax Act (in German); a sale within the year is taxed at the personal rate. The crypto tax in Germany page has the details.
Bitcoin meetups in Stuttgart
The grassroots scene meets at Einundzwanzig Stuttgart (in German), a monthly bitcoin meetup in the Einundzwanzig network of local groups. Its listing on Bitcoin-Treff (in German) describes a mixed crowd of bankers, students, founders and artists, open to beginners and experts alike.

Can I buy bitcoin at Börse Stuttgart?
Yes, through the group's own channels. Private investors use the Bison app or the BSDEX app, and customers of Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken buy through meinKrypto in their banking app, where Boerse Stuttgart Digital keeps the coins. A bitcoin exchange-traded product is a separate route through an ordinary securities account.
Who supervises bitcoin trading in Stuttgart?
BaFin. Under MiCA, a firm that trades or holds bitcoin for customers needs a license, and BaFin grants it to firms in Stuttgart as anywhere else in Germany. Börse Stuttgart as a securities exchange is also supervised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Baden-Württemberg.
Is there a bitcoin meetup in Stuttgart?
Yes. Einundzwanzig Stuttgart meets every month, with dates on the Einundzwanzig portal. Investment professionals who want the portfolio side meet at Finance Loop events in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Hamburg and at the Bitcoin for Investors masterclass.
