Bitpanda: the crypto broker from Vienna and its MiCA licenses
Bitpanda is an investment platform for crypto assets, stocks, ETFs and precious metals. Eric Demuth, Paul Klanschek and Christian Trummer founded it in Vienna in 2014, and the company has more than seven million clients. Bitpanda holds MiCA licenses in Germany, Austria and Malta and sells its trading and custody technology to banks.
Bitpanda and MiCA
Bitpanda was among the first large crypto firms with a license under MiCA, the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Germany's BaFin granted the first one in January 2025, as Cointelegraph reported. Malta followed, and in April 2025 Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) became the third MiCA supervisor to license the company. One license is enough to serve all EU member states; the others belong to the Bitpanda entities in each market.
Before MiCA, Bitpanda held national crypto licenses in Germany, France and Italy and a MiFID II license for securities. That is why the same app sells crypto assets and stocks.
Bitpanda for banks and institutions
Bitpanda sells its infrastructure to other financial firms. Banks use it to offer crypto trading in their own apps, and Bitpanda Custody, which came from the purchase of Trustology in 2022, holds assets for institutional clients. Deutsche Bank announced in 2025 that it would launch crypto custody in 2026 with Bitpanda and Taurus, as The Block summarized.
Bitpanda and a Frankfurt listing
In January 2026 Bloomberg reported that Bitpanda was preparing a listing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank as banks and a valuation of four to five billion euros, according to The Block. Bitpanda has not announced a date.
