Bundesverband für strukturierte Wertpapiere
Bundesverband für strukturierte Wertpapiere (BSW) represents issuers of structured securities in Germany. The association works on market rules, publishes statistics, and promotes transparent products and understandable investor information.
The work of BSW covers product classification, target markets, and shared standards for issuing certificates. BSW connects that work with European advocacy and dialogue among issuers, distributors, and supervisors.
Mandate and European representation
BSW represents the interests of its members in discussions with lawmakers, public agencies, and supervisors about rules for structured securities. It develops standards for transparency and investor protection and provides information for market participants and private investors.
Through the European industry body EUSIPA, the association brings a German perspective into discussions about rules at the EU level. Consistent terminology and clear product information matter to issuers and distributors because apparently similar investments can carry different risks and payout conditions.
Classifying products and explaining risk
The BSW product classification organizes structured securities by their principal payout features. It helps investors distinguish investment products from leveraged products and understand how a particular certificate works. The categories do not replace a review of individual terms, because redemption conditions, barriers, and issuer risk vary from product to product.
A payout chart helps explain how the redemption amount changes under different market scenarios. Evaluating a specific product also requires its complete terms and information about the issuer.
Target markets and key information documents
BSW worked with Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft and BVI on a joint target market concept for financial instruments under MiFID II. It sets minimum standards for defining and exchanging target market data between product manufacturers and distributors.
The association also provides templates for key information documents used with packaged investment products. These documents present central features, risks, and costs for investors to review before deciding on a product.
Members and market statistics
BSW brings together issuers of structured securities and supporting members. Members discuss market questions in association committees, while statistics published by BSW track market volume and individual product groups.
The association presents positions from a specialized segment of the industry; it does not represent every investor or every securities issuer in Germany. Assessing a specific investment also requires reading the product documents and considering the risk of its issuer.
