Finanzplatz Hamburg and its formats
Finanzplatz Hamburg e.V. is an association that companies from the financial sector founded in 2007. It has more than 110 members: banks, insurers, brokers and service providers from the metropolitan region, plus associations, institutions and individuals. Its motto is "hanseatic, reliable, innovative", and it works with politics, administration and universities to make Hamburg more competitive as a financial center.
The association runs Fintech Hamburg, a forum for fintechs and established finance firms with a Fintech Monitor of Hamburg fintechs. Finanzplatz on Tour (in German), made with the creators of CHEFTREFF, takes 50 students and young professionals by bus to three finance companies; the second edition stopped at Berenberg, Funk Gruppe and Exporo. The association's yearbook (in German) collected member articles, interviews and outlooks and is turning into a gallery of A0 posters with member contributions.
What Hamburg's finance sector specializes in
Finanzplatz Hamburg names foreign trade financing, ship and aircraft financing, media financing and investment in renewable energy as the city's specialties. IFB Hamburg, founded in 2005, is the promotional bank of the state of Hamburg and runs its public funding programs. Research on finance in Hamburg
Finanzplatz Hamburg lists the institutes that study the sector. The Hamburg Financial Research Center (HFRC) (in German) is an association for independent financial market research. The Hamburgisches WeltWirtschaftsInstitut (HWWI) is a privately funded economic research institute, the institut für finanzdienstleistungen (iff) researches sustainable financial services, and the Sustainable Finance Research Group studies how financial and investment markets affect sustainable business. Chairs at the University of Hamburg cover banking, behavioral finance and insurance, and Bucerius Law School works on corporate finance and financial market regulation.
Finance conferences in Hamburg
For AI in finance, Payment & Banking organized KI Exchange 2026 (KEX26) at the Prototyp Automuseum, with sessions on agentic banking, DORA compliance and fraud detection. Fintech Week is an umbrella event in Hamburg with talks, workshops and panels over several days, run by different hosts across the city. Students and young professionals get into finance firms through Finanzplatz on Tour.

Finance Loop started in Frankfurt and holds events in Munich, Berlin and Hamburg as well.
