flatexDEGIRO

flatexDEGIRO is a listed online broker group from Frankfurt that runs the brands flatex in Germany and Austria and DEGIRO in many other European countries. Private investors use both platforms to trade shares, ETFs, bonds and derivatives at low fixed prices, and the group holds its own banking license through flatexDEGIRO Bank AG. The DEGIRO brand began in the Netherlands and joined flatex in 2020.

Since December 2024 flatexDEGIRO also lets its customers buy and sell crypto assets, starting with about 20 coins including bitcoin and ether. flatexDEGIRO Bank AG notified BaFin in April 2025 under Article 60 of MiCA for the execution of crypto orders. Tangany holds the coins as custodian, and trading runs at all hours from an order size of one euro.

Notification to BaFin under Article 60

The interim MiCA register of ESMA lists flatexDEGIRO Bank AG with a notification to BaFin dated 4 April 2025. The notification covers one service, the execution of orders for crypto assets on behalf of clients, in 15 countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden.

As a bank, flatexDEGIRO needs no separate CASP authorization and can offer crypto services after a notification under Article 60 of MiCA. The bank has to meet the same rules on custody, conflicts of interest and complaints as an authorized provider, and BaFin supervises the crypto business together with its banking activities.

Partners for price, custody and execution

flatexDEGIRO built its crypto offer with three specialized partners. The securities trading bank tradias sets a reference price for each coin from several liquid trading venues, Tangany in Munich holds the coins, and the Wyden platform handles order routing, execution and settlement. Both tradias and Tangany are under the supervision of BaFin in Germany.

Moritz Karge, co-head of brokerage at flatexDEGIRO, said that the combined setup of Wyden, tradias and Tangany met the requirements of the broker. The coins of customers sit in crypto custody at a German custodian, and flatexDEGIRO charges no custody fee for them.

Rollout from Germany to five countries

The first customers to trade crypto were those of flatex and ViTrade in Germany in December 2024, followed by DEGIRO customers in Germany in the second quarter of 2025. Flatex customers in Austria followed in August 2025, and on 8 September 2025 flatexDEGIRO started crypto trading in Austria, France, the Netherlands and Spain.

Chief executive Oliver Behrens said at the rollout that crypto currencies can add another layer of diversification to a portfolio and that transparent pricing matters most in crypto trading. Frankfurt School of Finance & Management carries out test purchases in Germany for a long-term study on total costs that flatexDEGIRO commissioned.

Crypto at flatex: coins and order size

Crypto trading at flatex covers about 20 coins, among them bitcoin and ether, and runs around the clock on every day of the week. The smallest order is one euro, so customers can buy fractions of a coin from the same account that holds their shares and ETFs. In Germany gains on coins are private sales under the rules on crypto tax in Germany, unlike gains on shares.

DEGIRO crypto in five countries

DEGIRO crypto trading started in Germany in 2025 and reached customers in Austria, France, the Netherlands and Spain in September 2025. The coin list and the trading hours match those at flatex, because both brands use the same setup with tradias, Tangany and Wyden. The notification of flatexDEGIRO Bank AG also lists Belgium, Italy, Portugal and other DEGIRO countries where crypto trading had not started by September 2025.

Fees, spreads and custody costs

flatexDEGIRO prices crypto trades with fixed spreads and fixed commissions and charges no custody fee for the coins. The reference price from tradias averages several liquid trading venues, which keeps the price close to the wider market. The current amounts per order are listed in the price lists of flatex and DEGIRO for each country.

Buying bitcoin in the broker account

Customers who buy bitcoin at flatex or DEGIRO hold the coin itself, which Tangany keeps for them in Germany, and see it next to their securities. A bitcoin ETP or a bitcoin ETF from the US is a security instead, which sits in the regular depot and is traded on an exchange during its opening hours. Both routes are available in the same account, so customers choose between owning the coin and holding a crypto ETP.

Savings plans and staking

When flatexDEGIRO expanded crypto trading in September 2025, the company named staking and crypto savings plans as features planned for later. Staking would let customers earn rewards on proof of stake coins such as ether, while a savings plan buys a fixed amount of a coin at regular intervals. Until these features arrive, customers buy and sell coins with single orders.
