Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative

The Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Initiative (LSFI) is the body that coordinates sustainable finance in Luxembourg. It was set up in 2020 as a publicly funded public-private partnership. The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Environment, Luxembourg for Finance and the High Council for Sustainable Development stand behind it.

The LSFI supports banks, fund firms and insurers in Luxembourg that finance the move to a low-carbon economy, and it measures how far the financial center has come. Its strategy runs from 2025 to 2030, and its CEO is Nicoletta Centofanti.

Founders and origin

The LSFI grew out of a sustainable finance roadmap that Luxembourg drew up with the UN Environment Programme in 2018. The LSFI calls itself the country's coordinating entity for sustainable finance, a center of excellence and a knowledge hub. Its four backers are the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Luxembourg for Finance and the High Council for Sustainable Development.

The LSFI's office is at 12, rue Erasme on the Kirchberg plateau, the same address as the ABBL and ALFI.

Three pillars and the strategy to 2030

The LSFI works in three pillars: building expertise and leadership, unlocking potential and mobilizing the financial sector, and measuring and communicating progress. Its strategy for 2025 to 2030, launched in 2025, sets the work in each pillar. The LSFI holds an annual summit and runs a Women in Finance Charter.

Much of Luxembourg's sustainable finance sits in its investment funds. Sustainable bonds are listed on the Luxembourg Green Exchange of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, and some issuers now put green bonds on a ledger as tokenized green bonds.

Who leads the LSFI?

Nicoletta Centofanti is CEO. The LSFI names the members of its board of directors on its website.

Is the LSFI a regulator?

No. The LSFI coordinates and supports, and it has no powers over firms. The CSSF supervises how Luxembourg funds and banks disclose sustainability risks under EU law, and the Commissariat aux Assurances does the same for insurers.
