Swiss bitcoin companies
Swiss bitcoin companies build the services that let people and institutions buy, store and spend bitcoin, from savings apps and hardware wallets to custody for banks and payment terminals for shops. Many of them work only with bitcoin, and Bitcoin Suisse in Zug started in 2013, ten years before the European Union adopted its rules for such services.
In Switzerland these companies fall under the anti-money laundering law, and banks or securities firms among them need a license from FINMA. Companies that serve customers in the European Union add a MiCAR license from Liechtenstein, France or another country, and most of the companies on this list are based in Zurich or Zug.
Which companies are on this list
The list names Swiss companies whose main business is bitcoin, or banks that hold bitcoin for clients under a Swiss banking license, each with the founding year that the company states. The companies do not publish comparable customer numbers or volumes, so the table sorts them by founding year and not by size. Bitcoin Association Switzerland, founded in 2013, brings many of these companies together at its meetups in Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne, Neuchâtel and Basel.

Bitcoin Suisse: the oldest bitcoin broker in Zug
Bitcoin Suisse was founded in Zug in 2013 and sells bitcoin trading and custody to wealthy private clients, companies and institutional investors, each with a relationship manager. In November 2021 it became the first Swiss payment processor to accept bitcoin over the Lightning Network for its merchant clients. Its subsidiary Bitcoin Suisse (Europe) AG received a MiCAR license from the financial market authority of Liechtenstein in June 2026, which lets the company serve clients in selected countries of the European Economic Area.
Relai and Pocket: bitcoin straight into the own wallet
Relai in Zurich is a bitcoin-only app for savings plans, founded in 2020 by Julian Liniger and Adem Bilican, in which the customer keeps the keys to the coins. The French market supervisor AMF authorized Relai under MiCAR in October 2025, when the app had passed 500,000 downloads, and Relai has since made Germany its main growth market. Pocket Bitcoin in Lupfig, also founded in 2020, sends bitcoin bought by bank transfer directly to a wallet of the customer and bought the Neuchâtel wallet app Bitkipi in 2023.
Swiss bitcoin wallets: BitBox
Shift Crypto in Zurich, founded in 2015 and now known under its product name BitBox, builds the BitBox02 hardware wallet. The device comes in a Bitcoin-only edition whose firmware supports bitcoin and nothing else, because less code leaves fewer points of attack. The private keys stay on the device, and the owner confirms every payment on its own screen before the wallet signs it.
Bitcoin payments for Swiss shops
Swiss Bitcoin Pay is a checkout app for small businesses: the merchant types the amount in francs, and the customer pays by scanning a QR code or by tapping a Lightning card on the phone. The app accepts on-chain and Lightning payments on the same screen, and its version 2.0 added a wallet in the app and a split of payouts between bitcoin and francs. In Lugano more than 360 merchants accept bitcoin, according to the city program Plan ₿ Lugano.

Swiss bitcoin ETPs
21Shares in Zurich issues physically backed bitcoin ETPs that trade on SIX Swiss Exchange and on other European exchanges, with the coins held by institutional custodians. An ETP of this kind is a debt security, so an investor holds a claim on the issuer that the bitcoin in custody secures. Bitcoin ETFs in Europe explains the difference between this structure and a US spot bitcoin ETF.
Swiss banks that hold bitcoin
Sygnum Bank and AMINA Bank, the former SEBA Bank, hold Swiss banking licenses and keep bitcoin for their clients next to ordinary bank accounts. PostFinance lets its customers buy bitcoin in its app and uses Sygnum as its partner for custody. Since the Swiss DLT law of 2021, a bank keeps the bitcoin of its clients separate from its own estate, so the coins go back to the clients if the bank fails.
Bitcoin in Zug
The city of Zug has accepted bitcoin for municipal fees of up to 200 francs since 2016, and the Canton of Zug has accepted tax payments in bitcoin since February 2021, up to 100,000 francs per bill. Bitcoin Suisse runs the payment solution, takes the exchange rate risk for a fee and pays the canton in francs. Bitcoin Suisse and AMINA Bank both have their head offices in Zug.
The Swiss bitcoin reserve initiative
A popular initiative wanted to change the Swiss constitution so that the Swiss National Bank would hold bitcoin next to gold in its reserves. The initiators collected only about 50,000 of the 100,000 signatures needed by 30 June 2026 and let the campaign lapse in May 2026. The Swiss National Bank holds no bitcoin, because in its view bitcoin does not meet its requirements for currency reserves.
