What wealth management covers in Frankfurt

Wealth management is advisory and portfolio work built around a client's whole financial picture rather than a single account: investments, tax planning, estate and succession questions and, for the largest clients, access to private markets funds. It sits next to private banking, a term German banks often use for the same service, and above retail investing, where a client manages a single account with less advisory support.

Frankfurt carries the largest concentration of this work in Germany because it combines the head offices of the country's biggest banks with the European offices of several international ones. Deutsche Bank Wealth Management runs its advisory business from the city, and Commerzbank Wealth Management has a dedicated Frankfurt location as well.

The international private banks in the city

UBS runs its German head office for wealth management from the center of Frankfurt, with further locations in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart, and describes itself as a global wealth manager operating across all of these. The private bank Berenberg calls Frankfurt its second-largest location in Germany and has expanded its local advisory team, in part with hires who moved over from Deutsche Bank's private banking unit, according to Private Banking Magazin.

This concentration of international private banks alongside German ones means a wealth manager in Frankfurt regularly competes for the same client against a bank headquartered in Zurich, London or Hamburg, not only against domestic rivals.

The rules behind wealth management advice

Giving investment advice or managing a portfolio for a client is a regulated activity under section 32 of the German Banking Act (KWG), and BaFin supervises every bank and independent wealth manager offering it from its offices in Bonn and Frankfurt am Main. MiFID II sets the conduct rules on top of the license: an advisor has to run a suitability check before recommending an investment, disclose costs clearly and manage conflicts of interest, whether the advice comes from a person across a desk or a digital tool the bank has built.

For the largest mandates, the advisory relationship can shade into family office territory, where a dedicated structure takes over parts of the work a wealth management desk would otherwise handle.

What wealth managers in Frankfurt work on now

Talent movement between the banks is a visible pattern right now: Berenberg's Frankfurt hires from Deutsche Bank's private banking unit are one example of advisors moving between the larger houses as client relationships follow them. On the product side, private markets funds and semi-liquid structures such as ELTIFs are opening asset classes that used to sit only inside family offices to a broader wealth management client base.

Digital assets are a newer conversation. Clients increasingly ask their wealth manager about bitcoin as a portfolio allocation, a question the Bitcoin for Investors masterclass addresses directly for professional advisors, and some Frankfurt wealth managers now discuss tokenized real-world assets alongside traditional fund products.

What is the difference between wealth management and private banking?

The two terms overlap heavily and German banks often use them interchangeably. Where a distinction is made, private banking leans toward day-to-day banking and credit for wealthy clients, while wealth management leans toward investment advice, portfolio management and long-term planning such as succession. In practice, a Frankfurt bank's wealth management or private banking division usually covers both.

Which wealth managers are in Frankfurt?

Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank run their wealth management divisions from Frankfurt, alongside the German head office of UBS and a Berenberg office that the bank describes as its second-largest in the country. Independent multi-family offices, including the Family Office der Frankfurter Bankgesellschaft AG, serve the largest private clients from the same city.
