Coinbase and its MiCA license in Europe

Coinbase holds a license under MiCA, the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, granted by the Luxembourg financial supervisor CSSF. With it, Coinbase serves clients in all 27 EU member states from one license and has made Luxembourg its European hub. For a bank or asset manager that buys crypto through a broker or keeps it with a custodian, the license says which supervisor stands behind the counterparty.

Trading, custody and blockchain infrastructure

Coinbase states its mission as increasing economic freedom in the world. In its own description, it runs a platform for trading crypto, equities and prediction markets, for storing crypto assets and for access to the onchain economy. It serves consumers through its financial apps, institutions through a full-service prime brokerage platform, and developers through tools, APIs and infrastructure for crypto applications. Its investor page reports 246 billion US dollars in assets on the platform and more than 4,300 employees.

For institutions, Coinbase Prime combines trading, custody and financing in one platform, which crypto prime brokerage explains alongside other prime brokers. Coinbase Custody also appears as the named custodian in the documentation of several crypto exchange-traded products listed in Europe, as the Ethereum ETF page shows.

Coinbase's MiCA license from Luxembourg

Luxembourg's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) granted Coinbase its license as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA, Finance Magnates reported. It covers all 27 member states and a market of about 450 million people. Before, Coinbase operated under national registrations or licenses in Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain; The Block reported that Coinbase now runs these under a single framework. Coinbase gave Luxembourg's regulatory clarity and its record in financial innovation as its reasons, and The Paypers adds that Luxembourg has passed four laws on blockchain in financial services.

MiCA lets a provider licensed in one member state offer its services in every other one, so a customer in Germany deals with a Luxembourg-licensed entity. European crypto exchanges explains what a crypto-asset service provider license covers and how to check a provider in the ESMA register, and crypto hubs in Europe compares Luxembourg with Dublin, Amsterdam and Vienna.

Base and stablecoin payments

Coinbase built Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network with no token of its own, where ETH pays the fees. Circle's euro stablecoin EURC launched natively on Base, and payment apps on it move USDC or EURC directly between wallets. For a European payment firm the relevant question is the stablecoin's license: Circle issues USDC and EURC under a French e-money license that is valid across the EU.
