MCP business integration

The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is a standard for connecting AI applications with external data and tools. An MCP server exposes selected operations that a compatible client can discover and request. A business connection might retrieve an approved customer record or prepare a proposed update through the existing application interface.

For a small team, the project starts with the task that needs access to company systems. Define the information the assistant may read and the changes that require a person to approve them. The connection then needs tests for actual user permissions and client behavior before the business gives the assistant access to production records.

An AI agent connects to approved tools while an unapproved connection remains blocked.

Select tools from a specific business task

Describe a complete task before selecting the systems to expose. For example, preparing a customer briefing may require read access to contacts and open cases without permission to change either. List the information needed for that task and exclude unrelated data from the initial scope. Each tool should have a name and inputs that describe one understandable operation.

The MCP tool specification defines how servers expose model-callable tools and recommends human oversight. Tool discovery and a successful call are only parts of acceptance. Check whether the returned result is sufficient for the employee to complete the actual task and recognize any missing information.

Separate user access from the permitted business action

Agree which identity a request uses and where the business application checks access. Reading a customer record and changing a commercial condition should have separate permissions. Test a formally valid request from a user who lacks the required rights and confirm that the system refuses the action without returning unrelated confidential information.

Stripe provides MCP access with account and environment controls, including management of authorized sessions. Use the same questions when evaluating a connection to another application: which environment is selected, who granted access and how can that access be removed? A project should test withdrawal of access before the connection becomes part of everyday work.

Check the application API behind the MCP server

An MCP server depends on the operations and responses of the connected application. Inspect the available API and determine how records are identified and multi-page results are retrieved. Define what the client receives when a record is missing or the application cannot be reached. An incomplete response should leave the unfinished task visible to the employee.

A ready-made server may already cover the required task, while a custom connection may need a small set of additional tools. Compare both against the actual permissions and supported operations for that task. Keep unavailable application features separate from MCP development, because a protocol wrapper cannot supply a business function the underlying software does not have.

Verify compatibility and approval with the intended clients

Name the clients and environments included in the acceptance plan. Check authentication and tool discovery for each client, then execute the agreed ordinary and unauthorized requests. If a tool proposes a change, the reviewer should see the affected record and proposed values before deciding. Record the result of rejection alongside the result of approval.

Treat a tool description or a retrieved document as information to evaluate, with business permissions enforced by the connected systems. Include a test input that asks for an action outside the permitted task. Check whether the system blocks that request and whether the employee can identify what happened from the resulting status.

Hand over a connection the team can operate

The operating documentation should identify the tool list and the source application behind each operation. Assign responsibility for credentials and updates, including changes to the client or protocol version. Agree which diagnostic events are logged and keep unnecessary confidential payloads out of those records. The team needs a way to investigate a failed call without exposing more business data.

Before acceptance, disable the connection and walk through the agreed manual alternative with the responsible employee. Re-run the relevant tests after changing a tool or access rule. Compare implementation proposals by the tested client coverage and the handover evidence, with hosting and ongoing maintenance explicitly included or priced as separate work.

MCP development with Gateflow from Frankfurt

Gateflow develops MCP servers for selected business functions and existing application APIs. The Gateflow MCP development service covers defined tools, compatibility tests and operating instructions. Gateflow is based in Frankfurt and supports projects primarily in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with delivery location, travel and availability agreed for each assignment.

Small businesses and fintech teams can bring the API description and a list of intended clients to Gateflow. Ask for a proposal that names the permitted actions and the person accepting the result. Start with the task the team can test using representative records, then decide whether additional tools justify another project phase.
