What digital finance means in Frankfurt

Digital finance in Frankfurt covers the technology layer on top of the city's traditional banking and capital-markets business: digital assets and tokenization, the digital euro, open finance and open banking, and the AI tools banks now use in trading and risk. Frankfurt's position as the seat of the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank means digital finance policy for the euro area is often drafted a few streets from where a fintech is building the product it will regulate.

Deutsche Börse Group's digital-assets unit and Frankfurt's banks run pilots and licensed services side by side, from tokenized funds to instant-payment rails, which is why a Frankfurt digital finance event usually mixes bank innovation teams with fintech founders on the same stage.

Frankfurt Digital Finance and the conferences of the field

Frankfurt Digital Finance (FDF), part of the European Fintech Day, brings together European finance and fintech leaders to discuss digital assets, AI and the regulation shaping the next stage of the industry, held at the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten. The Crypto Assets Conference at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and the Digital Euro Conference of the Digital Euro Association cover the digital-assets and digital-money sides of the same field, often in the same week each spring. Capital & Code, hosted by the euro stablecoin issuer AllUnity with Finance Loop as media partner, covers stablecoins, tokenized funds and payments, and d-fine's Frankfurt Forum on Digital Assets & Applications brings DekaBank, 21X, the Bundesbank, Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank together on DLT-based market infrastructure.

These conferences target decision-makers from banks, asset managers, central banks and supervisory authorities, which sets Frankfurt's digital finance events apart from the founder-and-developer meetups more common in Berlin.

The digital euro and open finance in Frankfurt

The Digital Euro Association, a Frankfurt think tank, covers the design and rollout of a digital euro together with stablecoins and other forms of digital money, with speakers from central banks, commercial banks and fintechs. A survey by the Center for Financial Studies at Goethe University, funded by Frankfurt Main Finance, found that more than 60 percent of German finance professionals see no need for a digital euro. On the payments side, the wallet Wero runs on the EU's instant-payment rail in Germany and three other countries, an example of the open, bank-owned infrastructure that digital finance in Frankfurt increasingly builds on.

The EU's Financial Data Access Regulation (FIDA), still in trilogue negotiation as of 2026, would extend the account-access rights of open banking beyond payment accounts to savings, investment and insurance data, a change Frankfurt's banks and fintechs are already tracking for their next products.
